Here is a summary of advice from bulb expert Brent Heath about daffodils, the best types for different regions.
1. NE US and Canada-plant 6 weeks before ground freezes, trumpet and poeticus types such as 'Artic Gold,' 'Bravoure,' 'Spellbinder.'
2. Mid-Atlantic-plant types for early, mid-season and late including N.
'Rijnveld's Early Sensation,' N. poeticus var. recurvus
3. Southeast- 'Geranium,' 'Sweetness,' 'Thalia,' 'Trevitithian'
in the Deep South- (zone 8 and 9) 'Carlton,' 'Gigantic Star,' and 'St. Keverne' among the best yellow cultivars
4. North Central US and Canada-trumpets, large-cups and small cups
5. PNW, NW Canada and Central Pacific-almost every type of daffodil should do well
6. Southwest-plant bulbs late, in December or January-jonquils and tazettas should do well
7. Gulf Coast region-purchase pre-cooled types or precool them for 6-8 weeks before planting.

Thalia is definitely in my Top 10 of daffodils. And I plant Rijnveld's Early Sensation just for the fact that it blooms two or three weeks before any other daffodil.

Douglas, I love Thalia too and was interested to see that Gardens Illustrated named it 2011 Spring-Flowering Bulb of the Year. Unfortunately they also seem to like Euonymous alatus 'Compactus' which does have great fall color but can be invasive, at least in the US.
