I need to drill holes in a terra cotta planter saucer

I'm going to make a fairy garden on the saucer. I would like to stand the slice of wood upright on the saucer and place the doll house door in the base of the wood, like you would if it was a real tree. My issue is how to drill the holes without cracking to saucer? Thanks for your ideas.

Put down some cross hatched masking tape where you want to drill the hole. Use a small bit to start, increasing the size as needed. Hope this helps. You might try soaking the saucer first also, so it is not just dry clay. Hope this helps.

If you are not using an electric drill,I would fill the saucer with water before drilling.I bet if you sprayed the drill bit with some Wd-40 would help with the friction too?

Make sure you are using a black colored masonry bit or at least a glass and tile bit, but do fill the saucer with water to keep the bit cool

If you soak the terracota first and drill with very little pressure.
