Weatherizing a sterno fireplace mantle to use on porch

I bought a sterno fireplace of a craigslist with the intentions of using it in my master bedroom. I have since decided to hold off and a get a wall mount gas fireplace when I convert the fireplace to gas logs and the kitchen range to gas.
Now I have this fireplace/mantle. I thought it might be nice to put on covered back porch, I'm gonna paint it with exterior paint and it will not spend all its time on porch but a lot during summer, store indoors when to cold to during winter. Any suggestions on weatherproofing for the hot humid south?

Go to your local paint store with picks and ask them which type of paint is the best to use, for you need to make sure to address the fact that you will be using it as a working fire place.
