Anna Day
by Anna Day
I have 300 orchid plants, some in flower others not yet, and need to put each in a pot to sell them. I'm keeping another 300 for later. What cheap pretty containers can I us?. Thanks in advance, Anna in Australia! I really love seeing all the American women's ideas! Inspirational. Thanks for the website.

Dear Anna, I use clay pots and decorate them with stuff I can get from the Dollar Stores here in the US, things like butterflies, sea shells etc, and they look great, plus hanging baskets with coconut straw, have fun I have lots of fun with my orchids at the moment they are in baskets hanging next to my water garden . I believe they recommend plastic pots for orchids. The dollar tree has its own web site and you can place large orders with them.

Orchids do not do well in plastic pots. You should use the clay pots they sell for orchids, There are not expensive. Spray them in different colors to spruce them up.

You didn't say what variety of orchid. Some, like the moth orchids, need pots with the slits in the sides and the clay pots should not be painted or sealed as they need to 'breathe'. Other types of orchids can be put in plastic pots...Google the variety you have and see what type of pots you can use. There are orchid supply houses on the 'net that have some inexpensive pots...you could put ribbons or other decorations on the pot to dress them up.

This is just one of many articles on the internet about clay vs plastic. It doesn't address the whole problem of the different varieties and, also, that many of the orchids need some light to get to their roots (hence the 'splits' in the pots or the clear pots) so you will need to read other articles, too.http://roseg4art.com/Growing-tips/clay-vs-plastic-orchid-pots.htm
