How to paint veneer tabletop

Patti
by Patti
Hello. I purchased this table for my newlywed daughter's small apartment which has no defined eating area. It doesn't match her furniture and the veneer is damaged but it has good bones. In my haste, I didn't realize that paint would probably scrape off when turning the tabletop. Does anyone have any suggestions?
This is how the table looks closed.
This is the table open which must be twirled one quarter turn to get to the position for stability. I don't want to scrape any paint off when doing so .
This is the table fully opened

Try Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, known world wide as THE decorative paint for furniture etc. It needs very little if any surface prep (no sanding!!) and comes in 33 amazing colours. Read more about on www.anniesloan.com

Thank you Reina. I love chalk paint. However, I am concerned about the paint scraping off the top when it converts from console to table. The table folds open and then requires to be turned a quarter turn. I'm concerned that the friction will scrape off the paint and turn the whole thing into a big mess

I would suggest Annie Sloan paint as well. But for a completely different approach you could wallpaper it and varnish it. That works really well, there are some details here http://www.pillarboxblue.com/brilliant-ideas-for-upcycling-with-wallpaper/

At first use sandpaper to sand the veneer finish then use a tack cloth to remove dust particle. Paint a coat of primer onto the veneer finish. Let the primer dry for about 24 hours. Apply at least two coats of your chosen paint to the veneer surface, painting over the dried primer.

Thank you so much for your advice! What type of paint would you suggest that would bond without scraping and what would I use to finish it?

Wouldn't chalk paint scrape off the top when I close the table ? There is friction when the tabletop is slid into place in open mode. When closed, one-half of the bottom side becomes the table top that is visible.

I would use a 200 grit sand paper and gentle sand that whole side and then clean it off real well and clean the other side and try to match the stain and re stain the whole table. If you are going to paint it use a great primer then the color. When it has dried for 24 hrs. Get a gallon of Marine polyurethane (you will have to mix it) and put 2 coats on it (let it dry approx 24 hrs. Oh..sand between coats with steel wool or very soft sand paper in water. Wipe dry apply second coat and you will never have to polish it. And it will be so duriable you can cut on it.

I have one of these tables too, and I glued felt to the edge of the base so it was not wood on wood when turning it. And always remember to turn slowly.Or try turning first then open it.
