Do you want to make the island bigger?

wow awesome. I renovated my kitchen recently.Unfortunately I did not have enough room to make my island larger. So instead I made two large draws above large cabinets to be able to store silverware and serving pieces. The two cabinets underneath one is used for large pots and pans The other I use for more pots but the draws pull out easier on the back.

@Cheryl, are you asking if you need a range hood? If so that's up to local code.

@Cheryl , more photos with different angles of the kitchen could help us help your BIL too. The more details you give, the better too.
  • If you are asking about an island remodel, then here is what we did,,,,,,On a recent kitchen remodel, we made this island from two stock cabinets, topped w/plywood and then a pre-fabricated granite piece that is 3X5 (I believe?? or 3X4 maybe). We bought the turned legs(and stained them to match the cabinets ) and bolted them to the ground. These support the overhand of the granite. The second pic shows what the front of the island looks like. Plenty of storage. If you are asking about the stove, personally, I would move it out of the middle and over to a place against the wall. Is that doable??? I just don't like having a vent hood in the middle of the ceiling! Or maybe have one of those retractable vents that come up from the countertop and recess back down when not in use. If you are redoing the entire kitchen, might as well get it exactly how you want it. Nothing worse than saying, "I wish I would have done that" after you are all done.

Thank-you.will be removing a wall to open to dining room so that really limits any wall space for a traditional range.there is an alcove where we intend to place a wall oven/microwave.that's why I thought an island cooktop would be an option

There are lots of tutorials on Hometalk about kitchen islands. One of them may give you ideas. I am with Beth H. that if it is doable, move the stove against one of the walls - not a fan of middle position.

As far as a cook top goes, that depends on budget. I have an electric glass top stove and I love it. It is so much easer to clean then the old drip pans. Since it will be in an Island you might want to consider the new induction cook tops. All I know about then is that they stay cool to the touch. I have learned over the years it is best not to settle on a redo as you may have to live with it for a long time. You might also consider a jenn aire with the pop up air exchange. I'm not sure if they have to be vented to the outside or not. With a lot of research, you should be able to get the perfect island and cook top "for you". Please post pictures when you finish.

You can reasearch vent motors (whole house fans, etc.) if you want to use the casing you have here. Just duct it through the attic above or follow the joists to the outside wall. If you have to follow the joists, it will require removing the ceiling material along the joists. Otherwise, you can pull that down and use a new curved glass one. Ariah (online at Home Depot)is one I am using on both of my kitchens. I have a friend who put in an induction cooktop on her island and she loves it. It would be a lot safer than the glass tops hiding an element.

keep in mind the mess of a stove top on your island that you entertain at.....I have a microwave drawer in mine (LOVE IT) and my stove against the wall..the island is open for entertaining and serving and prep.
