Building a hearth

Can anyone give me any advice on building a hearth for a homemade fireplace. I put one of those electric heaters that looks like they have flames in the fireplace.

I am going to be building one for a fireplace heater this fall for my office. I am going to design my hearth much like they do in old apartments here that use to have the gas fireplaces. Same concept. I am going to buy 2- 4 shelf book cases, put one on each side of the space heater and run a board across the top. I have some marble tiles that I am going to cut and grout those to the top of my hearth(board) that way easy to assemble and move if need be. **Can also add realistic looking bricks that are made of foam, for a more realistic effect.
