Mid century stool re-vamp

Should I go the upcycle belt route or should I reupholster it with mid century-esque material?? Look below and let me know you what all think please.
This is it. Old Naugahyde is in bad shape and it has no cush to it all.
This is how I had it in my apartment...used a Vintage Scarf to cover the stained Naugahyde!
Now it sits with these belts for me to get the feel of it this way. To me it is mixing too many styles together.
This is paper...but thinking about using a Mid Century-esque material to Reupholster it adding some cush to the stool in the process.

  • I like the 3rd one. I would also sand down the metal and get a good quality spray paint and redo that as well. Use very, very light coats to achieve a perfect looking finish.

@Beth H. Makemeprettyagain.blogspot Thanks...I am probably going to reupholster it with the material I designed. I am a big Mid Century Lover and keeping things as original as possible. When I reupholster I will leave original Naugahyde on it. I will not repaint....the metal/paint is in good shape.

I would definately reupolster the piece. I like the metal I personally would not touch that.

I would reupolster; I would consider doing something different to the metal.

Thanks everyone...I am leaving the metal as is....it is in good shape and I always try to keep Mid Century items as close to original as possible. Probably going to try the Reupholster route...but as I look at it right now I am digging the belts...but if you seen my projects on hometalk...I like old belts! :)

If you like the belts: Why not make a box / trunk for the body and use the belts as henges and latches. You would have more storage and the legs would be more stable. I remember those stools, they tended to get wobbly with a lot of use.

Reupholster on the base. Place star foam square about two inches short from edge all around then roll, tightly a length of polyester batting for the four sides and secure. Then I would cover with a plain strong cloth pulling tightly to fasten under the base. Then select your top cover and do the same. You will want the roll of batting to be so full as will be a little higher than the star foam cushion so when you tighten the material it will be about the same level as the star foam. This makes a nice firm cushion for the stool. By doing this you won't have wrinkled material where the leg arch extends above the stool.

If you like the dynamic so much, why not just clean the fabric with saddle soap. That's what I used back then on grungy restaurant chairs with the same plastic upholstery. Made them look new and softened the fabric. Colors I remember: white, black, and orange. Avacado green and harvest gold were popular colors then but I don't remember those colors on this type of furniture.

I love the look of the scarf, it would be amazing to find a similar pattern in a heavier weight to reupholster the stool. The colors are amazing with the metal legs. Perhaps fusing the scarf onto a heavier muslin?

have you ever seen the bottom of a chair covered in just belts? I saw one in Beeville, Tx. at a shop.......she interweeved belts across and down making sure all the buckles ended underside.....but it was really cute

I finally have done something with this stool. But although I was not going to do anything with the legs...they are looking shabby against the new material. They are originally copper colored which matches the material nicely...but should I paint them a different color? I re-upholstered it without the right tools and this would only be my second time at it...yes there is something "off" about it but it wills that way. )
