Appliances- which refrigerator should we go with?

by Liliana Wells
We are trying to decide between two refridgerators. They are both comparable in price, features and size. The slightly larger one (French doors) will stick out more past the kitchen cabinets, about 4 and a half to five inches. Will that make the kitchen look unbalanced or unsightly? The one we are currently using sticks out 7 inches. So the larger of the two will stick out about 12 inches total.

I have a LG that sticks out a bit less that 12 in, but I think it looks fine. I guess it would depend on where you fridge is in the kitchen...you know what I mean? My old one was what I thought was "normal" size. It was small in comparison to the new one, but I love it! It's the french door style.

Whether or not it looms over the space, greatly depends on the layout of the kitchen, how much room you have around the fridge, and even the color scheme of the kitchen. I would say make sure you are buying from a place that will take it back and exchange it if you are not happy. And most places offer design/layout services to help w/the decision.

I purchased one like the 3 door unit shownand i luv it..note to design that mine was not stainless on the sides but a dark grey...this worked for me because my lower cabinets are also dark grey but uf thry had not been the fridge would have jumped out more visually. I bought mine on line and didnt know intil it showed up but i lucked out. Something to consider

I absolutely hated my fridge w/French doors!

As long as the cabinet doors can open there is no reason you coulnt go with the french door unit. Also keep in mind the style of your kitchen.

I would pull you existing refrigerator out to the max. 12" and live with it for a while before I mad my decision. BTW we just bought a bottom freezer Kenmore Elite and love it. Very quiet and works great for us. Good luck.

I hate my French door fridge! Not for the size, but for accessibility. I THOUGHT I'd like it and lusted for it and when my old standard one died, I went for it. Big mistake as far as I'm concerned. I just never know which door to open and sometimes must open both in order to get to certain items. Mine is white (the only good thing about it for me) and while, financially, I want it to stay working, I'd trade it in a minute for one door. So really, the decision is up to you on likes and dislikes. I don't think the depth of the refrigerator should be any problem. You'll learn to work around that.

Thank you to everybody who took the time to answer. You have given me things to consider. Ours would be black to go with the other appliances, which we are not ready to replace.

I've had 3 Whirlpool French door refrigerators in under two years. Avoid them. As far as depth and width don't worry but look at the Samsung French door. They don't need the extra space to open doors and have a great rating. Good luck!

My only input is with the freezers on these. Everything is stacked and difficult to "find". I'd consider the 3 door Samsung. It has double door refrigerator above, and a swing out door for the freezer with slide out shelving. Much easier to see what's in there!

I hate the french doors, I have always had side by side, which holds much more in the freezer.

I have the French doors with the freezer below and love it. My one piece of advice would be to pull out your current fridge as far as the new one will stick out and see if it bothers you. Then make your decision.

I have been in Your current dilemma while updating the basic, cheap appliances that came with My former Home.Yes,The extra "12 is going to look "off" & will under no certain terms,Slowly drive You insane until You end up returning the fridge while still covered under the satisfaction warranty.Like I did.You MOST DEFINITELY are going to HAVE TO put out the 15%-20% higher price,For a "Counter depth fridge".But they are well worth the extra money!! If the higher retail price bothers You that bad or,You simply cannot afford the higher asking price,Then try to negotiate with the Salesman until You agree on a mutually acceptable price.Or You can search Craigslist in Your area & specifically search for "Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator" May private appliance brokers advertise & barter on Craigslist.Just remember,Buying a very heavy Fridge from a dealer on Craigslist won't void the manufacturer warranty,That's standard for new appliances regardless. But they may not offer a delivery/installation service & require You to pick up the fridge by 7 days or forfit any & all monies or deposits that You have already paid out.So PLEASE make sure that the new, reasonably priced yet still an investment after what You just paid out & handed to a stranger.ASK,ASK,ASK!! Ask any question that bothers our conscience or just keeps repeating & replaying in Your head!! And keep in mind,No matter how condescending the salesman in ANY retail environment acts towards You,As if another Customer will potentially swoop in to pay above His asking price & his "final deal" that he can make without losing money on this large appliance sale..Let any Salesman TRY to act like that,But in reality,Keep in mind that no matter how many potential Customers walk in,Browse then haggle,Only to walk out of the store without handing the salesman one red cent.Because these are expensive, technologically advanced major purchases & on a great month,Joe Salesman only sells 1-3 large appliances a month so dont pay attention to Him false confidence in Himself..He needs to make a sale asap & most people only ask a ton of questions, waste His time & walk out without making any purchases. The hassle is worth the huge discount that You'll get by dealing with a Broker instead of a retail salesman at such-&-such store..Its YOUR time & money so,YOU HAVE THE FINAL SAY SO & THE POWER TO WALK AWAY no matter how honest Your intentions to complete the purchase was! Now,Back to Your original question & concern.Once You see how better a counter depth fridge looks,You'll be sold.Plus that extra money will be forgotten in time because this is a purchase that if properly maintained,Should last 15-25years with only minor repairs.or upkeep..I hope that My personal experience with this very issue helped. Its a shame I ended up selling My house & my fridge that ran Me $2,000 is sitting in My basement as an "extra fridge" because the sites I posted it for sale,Want to pay less then $500 for a stainless steel, counter depth, french door fridge thats only a little over 2 years old.Or they want Me to deliver it & cant understand that I'm just a single Mom,Not a salesman & that no private,as-is sale includes delivery! People on Craigslist are sure unique,Thats for damn sure!! I included a pic of mine but its hard to see any difference or shortened depth unless it was sitting next to a standard "24 base cabinet and/or a "12 upper cabinet,To be able to see the HUGE difference in aesthetics by making them more narrow.

Hello Liliana, if energy savings is a concern, the French door fridge may cost more to run each year. You may also want to consider which one has the most useable storage space. We recently wrote a post about things you should consider when buying a fridge. We think it will help you make up your mind: http://goo.gl/UGLauH
  • Anna Anna on Aug 29, 2015
I don't know if this helps, but I have a side-by-side that sticks out farther than an 'old-fashioned' kind. It as way less storage because the shelves are so narrow. I would take back my original one in a heartbeat.

I found the same with the one with have now. When we moved into this house all appliances were black, so we had to buy a black refrigerator. I thought I wanted a side-by-side. Fortunately, we bought this second hand; so now I am ready to go back to the up and down style that has really more room.
