Has anyone out there painted laminate flooring?

I am looking for a quick fix for faded and worn laminate flooring, and thought I could paint it and use one of those "graining tools" to add depth. If you have painted laminated floors, please tell me what kind of paint you used, and how durable it is.

I dont think you need to be so quick to paint the floor. Try a restore product first. It is available at home imrovement stores.

I really don't think there is a product out there that is durable enough to withstand painted laminate flooring and by the time you do gather everything your going to need to tackle such a task you really could purchase new flooring.

I did paint my kitchen floor six years ago, which is a high traffic area. The flooring is very cheap vinyl stick ons. It was in good shape but dingy and ugly - could not get it clean. Did not have the money for new and thought "what the hell" can't hurt! I primed it and then used a color I liked of just plain interior semi-gloss. I then did three coats of a Pittsburgh Paint polyurethane that I had purchased years before. It has stood up fantastically. Except for actual rips where a refrigerator was moved it has no blemishes or problems. Good luck!

This is my biggest complaint about laminate flooring; it just doesn't last very long before it starts to show wear and tear. Laminate flooring is generally nothing but layers of pressed cardboard with a pretty fake wood looking top layer laminated on. Once that thin top layer gets scratched, faded or otherwise looking shabby, there is virtually NOTHING that can be done to salvage it. You can't sand it. You can't apply any products that will restore it to its original state. Since moisture is Enemy #1 of laminate, I would be concerned about the moisture from paint seeping down into the seams and causing bubbling, swelling or peeling of the laminate. Once the smallest amount of moisture gets down past that top laminated layer or between the seams, it's just like a cancer that eats away at the pressboard-like layers underneath. Do you have several extra pieces of leftover laminate that you could snap together and paint as a test before you run the risk of ruining all of your flooring? Personally, I would not attempt painting laminate flooring...at least I wouldn't attempt painting MY laminate floors. As much as I hate my laminate, I think painting it would be even worse.

I have had mine for years never once had a issue. What did you clean it with and did you saturate the floor?

@Janet Pizaro Why are you assuming SHE did something to her flooring? We bought a HUD home and the flooring is worn and faded due to the neglect of the previous owners, not because WE did something to it!

kathy I did not assume anything. I was asking her because a lot of people do not no the flooring cannot be wet. So don't be so quick to add a comment .
