Zebra Striped Cornice Boards: Paint & Installation How To

When we decorated the nursery before baby #1 arrived, the one project on the to do list that didn't get completed was the addition of the window treatments. We had roller shades installed to block the light, but didn't get around to installing the zebra striped cornice boards and sheer zebra drapes that I had planned. It wasn't until baby #2 arrived that we finally got this project completed.

We have modern, long thin windows (like that at the right of the photo above) throughout our home, and while I love the style, they pose a window covering challenge because they aren't well suited to drapes. But I really wanted to add something decorative to these windows in the nursery to make them feel more complete.


I found a pretty, sheer zebra striped drape at Target that I wanted to hang in the standard shaped window in the room, so I decided that adding a matching cornice board along the top of both windows would be a good way to make the windows match. In the vertical window, the cornice board would also hide the tension rod from which the sheer drape would hang.


I began by purchasing two boards at the hardware store, painting each white, and then using a pencil to draw in zebra stripes. (Details at the link below)


I was so nervous about painting this stripes, but they really turned out well!
Once the boards were full painted, my husband and installed them above the two windows. You'll find the detailed photo tutorial for the installation at the link below.


Here's what it looks like with both cornice boards in place.
Finally, it was time to hang the sheer zebra drape in the vertical window.
