By planning standards 36" is good work space .. only 15" is required for landing space. When I design kitchens with open plans like this, I walk thru with clients and ask ... "do you think you will work by the stove, or will all of your prep, etc be on the island" ... look out, or at a wall?
With this plan.. it was a HUGE improvement over what they had. wish I had before photos :-/ This island is 5' x 10' .. generous. They dont work on the side of the frig .. they pull out and turn around to the island for big activities.
What is not detectable in these photos is the cabinets between the oven and the refrigerator are appliance garages ... all the doors flip and slide in (pocket doors) -- so there is more counter space than what meets the eye.
This is a beautiful kitchen. Not trying to be picky, but as a mother of five and grandmother of seven, I would round off the counter top edges. I'm glad we did this when we remodeled our kitchen.
I wish I had an appliance garage. That way I could keep my mixer and slow cooker out. I like an uncluttered look, but unfortunately don't have that...because of my wheelchair, I have to have more things out on my countertops where I can get to them.
I think the whole kitchen is great! And when you do a re-design of a kitchen, the wished and wants of the clients are first and foremost. It might not be best for a spec home, but this is perfectly beautiful.
Pots and pans/deep drawers are a given in any design -- i suggest with every design, but more often than not, homeowners already know and ask for them! They are so practical for anything .. pots, pans, tuperware, snacks, dishes ... anything that is less than 10" tall. The only thing that they are not good for is canned goods because you cannot read the labels.
They have only recently become popular with "able bodied" people. (here) I found that my bottom pot and pan drawer closest to my computer desk was deep enough for hanging files! And real file drawers would have been much more expensive.
Id suggest to start with www.nkba.org. Depending on the level of service you need, design fees alone average 4-6% of project cost. But are often buried in product purchases with many designers.
Id pay dearly to have this much counter! :)
