I like that little island. I think people assume you need more space for an island, but I'm guessing that little island adds some really handy chopping and mixing workspace (which always seems to be in short supply).
The island was pushing the limits of recommended walk space but it achieved many challenges with an otherwise wide kitchen. The refrigerator/pantry is on the wall adjacent to the range. So indeed the island provides a great landing space or central prep area!
