Nice pathways add so much to the landscape

Natalie did you dig down under the stepping stones? I want something like this that winds between my flower beds so I don't sink into mud. (I weed after the rain.) But I don't want the gravel to be taken over by the wet soil. Is there a foundation and retainer on the edges? Do you have pictures of the project in progress?
