I need a way to measure accurately. Is there a homemade template I can make to hold up to the door each time, for my drill mark?

You can buy them at Home Depot and Lowes for different types of door and drawer handles and knobs. There are many kinds to pick from and they aren't expensive at all.

Liberty Cabinet and Drawer Installation Template comes as a set with a drill bit from Home Depot. it should be under $10 tax included. I have a set and they work great!

Cut a square piece of wood, tack on two small cleats along two sides to form the angle, measure the distance of the fasteners or mounting posts, use that measurement to transfer to the wood jig, make sure you measure from two sides, drill the holes and test your hard wear to make sure it fits place jig on the door and drill your holes will be the same on all doors

Agree with others, buy one. I think they are less than $5. I've made one and used the store bought. Save the hassle.
