Faye, I'm not sure if your question is how to make sure your soil is organic, or about preparing that soil for planting. There are varying standards for organic certification, but generally the soil must have been free from prohibited pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers for three years proceeding growth. If you are a home gardener, there is no reason for you to follow "the letter of the law," but it is a good idea knowing what the standard is. In terms of soil preparation, it ...»
is always best to start with a soil test, so you know where you stand. Then you should amend the soil appropriately, making sure to only use materials that meet organic standards.

If you are growing for your self personally, what you need to concentrate on is using an organic approach to future maintenance of the garden, If you have a company spraying and fertilizing your yard, keep them well away from the garden area. The idea with organic is to avoid synthetic products that kill the beneficial insects provided by nature. One of the best ways to be successful at organic gardening is to use raised beds, this makes everything much easier, you will cut back on many of ...»
the problems gardeners have growing vegetables. Don't use things like pressure treated wood or rail road ties to build the raised beds as they are filled with the chemicals we art trying to avoid, I usually use concrete wall stone. Many of the suppliers of bulk mulch will have some kind of landscape soil that will work well in your garden it wont be called organic, but I don't hesitate to use it in my garden. I use ESPOMA products which are organic for all of my fertilizer and insect control needs. The other thing to be aware of is the type of plants you are growing very few people realize how compromised our food supply is, most vegetables have been grown from GMO seed. These companies are going as far as putting animal DNA and DNA from other plants in our fruits and vegetables, many vegetables are what is called Round-Up ready, farmers can spray the crop with round-Up to kill the weeds but not kill the finished produce you are buying in the store to eat. You can find non GMO seed on line

(survival seed) is where I get my seed from. My family buys very little food from the grocery store, we grow it, or hunt for it, or it come of a cattle ranch owned by a close friend of mine. Every one should spend the time to understand what big agriculture is doing to our food. GROW YOUR OWN
