I would plant them tomorrow!. They need light to germinate so prepare the soil and then just barely cover them with pine straw, make sure the soil is moist before you sow the seed.

Hi Mabel; depending on your methods it's not necessarily too late. You can start them indoors during the winter by sowing seeds into grow trays or pots filled with soil. Keep them watered and place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse with strong light until the last frost has passed. Another method is sowing the seeds indoors in the spring, and then move them outside after that last frost. I'm not familiar with Timberlake, but with more moderate areas, plant the seeds in outdoor soil in the spring.

I think you will have the best results if you direct sow the poppy seeds.

I think it may already be too cold to plant poppy seeds in Person County. It might be safer to store the seeds in a cool dry place and plant them in the spring after all danger of frost is past. As Erica says, the results are better if you direct sow them where you want them to growi. It takes about 2 weeks for them to germinate.
