About Me:

Married to soulmate for 35 years. Mom of son & daughter. Also, 2 dogs. Have loved decorating since I was a child and had a play house. Owned a business, Carpenter's Daughter, where I made and sold trash to treasure items. Enjoy having meaningful things in my home that have a story.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Love to repurpose and upcycle items I've found. My husband helps make it happen. We say, "out of my head and thru his hands". Also love to do mosaics, stenciling, painting and florals.

my dish flowers...

Well I FINALLY got them made. I am not very happy with them, I think they look stupid with pvc stems I didn't paint. (I should) But the hostas are coming up and will surround them so ...»
maybe they will look better soon. I think I also am going to move them back further, to the neighbors ' ugly house' to detract maybe from their peeling paint etc. Any suggestions as to how I could have done them better? Different plates, rebar? (Which cost more than the plates did!) This is my first attempt after seeing the great ones on Ht, and I was very leery. But FINALLYYYY! tada! NEW PICTURES.....hostas growing in, I am happier, doesn't look so barren now! Next ones will be green pvc or whatever! @KELLY, GAIL

These are sooo creative and beautiful. I went to a craft show yesterday and saw a lot of yard ...»
art at high prices, but nothing this pretty. You did great, Bernice! I wouldn't worry about the pvc pipe. It will strong and sturdy with it and it will be covered by plants. It looks fine.

  • The shows the back, I cut out "tools" from newspaper and laid them on as stencils in order to make it look as though he should hang his tools in these spots. 1
  • I put the "bins" underneath to give him a place to store his "cars" etc that might need to be "worked" on unti he got to them....
  • This is a close up of the top, four layers of paint, the "modge podge transfer" and two layers of Krylon Clear should keep it easy to wipe clean

What's the best way to repair damage to top of a stained table?

My smart college daughter set a tissue with nail polish remover in it, right on top of this end table. We just bought the table a few months ago. Would like to know what is the best way ...»
to repair these two spots of damage? Taking it back to furniture store for repair is $100. an hour and no, we didn't take out a warranty on it because it's not like we have little kids running around anymore......

No, Ellen H, I never did get ...»
this figured out. The company sent me those paint/stain pens but I haven't tried them. Mainly because I had already tried another brand of those and they didn't work. Wow, that's scary about the flea protection. That's what we use!

White Twig and Holly Berry Woodland Mantel

This year's living room mantel has a garland layered with holly berry and white twig garland...trees to provide a place for owls and birds to perch...and a wreath of home grown cotton with a wooden monogram.

  • This Coke inspired mantel makes me smile real big! It's funky and junky, so it passed.
  • The fireplace is oversized, which demands the same treatment to match. I 'overstuffed' the mantel with greens until I could green no more. Here's a side view. Layers upon layers.
  • Being a snow lover, a little of the faux variety worked perfectly around the woodbox and sleigh.
  • The sleigh has me wishing that snow was real!
  • Here it is lit up at night, all glowy and everything. A vintage ruler was bent into a star shape to further chime with all things vintage.

A Christmas fireplace just goes better with... Coke?

I have a theory. Picking one object of desire, then making it work is my mantra. (especially necessary for a junker) I had just landed this amazing black metal coke sign and knew it had ...»
to marry my fireplace mantel for Christmas. Closeup shots are also avail.

So.. how did I do?!

My Collected Christmas Mantel

I love how my Christmas mantel came together this year. By layering various salvaged and thrifted items, adding contrasting {rustic and bling-y} textures and using greenery to soften it ...»
all, the mantel and fireplace wall turned out beautifully. I love the one little word that is the focal point of it all. :)

  • I added Christmas greenery to the twig wreath, along with little red berries.
  • Add sprigs and Christmas florals is what makes this wreath so beautiful.
  • I hot glued pine cones in the middle of the wreath.
  • I think burlap ribbon is one of the prettiest ribbon!
