Gardening: My pomegranate tree is being attacked by ants!

I love looking outside and seeing how well our pomegranate tree is dong this year. We've raised it over the past 6 years from a tiny sapling and now it's producing some beautiful fruit. ...»

But the other day my daughter came running inside screaming, "The patio is swarming with ants!" I went out to see what was going on and I see a ton of ants making a line across the lawn and headed directly for the pomegranate tree. They were climbing up the trunk and crawling all over the leaves! By nature, I'm the "live and let live" type when it comes to insects outdoors. So I left them alone, assuming they could do no harm. But this morning I noticed that many of the tree's leaves have shriveled up and I'm afraid that ants will kill the tree or at least ruin the fruit.

Does anyone have any information that can help me?

First of all, why are the ants suddenly attacking this tree?

Can they do real damage?

If so, what is the simplest way to get them to stop and keep them off of the tree?

I prefer a natural remedy to using chemicals, but if only chemicals will help I'm willing to go that route.

Can Someone Give Me A Hand?

I've been dying to try my hand at one of the hypertufa hand planters again this year. Last year I tried one and half my fingers fell off, so pretty much anything would be an improvement. ...»
Doubling the amount of Portland Cement in my normal hypertufa recipe plus adding the "rebar" appears to have made all the difference. My hands came out perfectly and are hard as a rock. Or cement.

The recipe for hypertufa can be found on Hometalk on this post - http://www.hometalk.com/1285023/making-light... or on my blog on this post - http://www.houseofhawthornes.com/2012/05/mak... .

  • I added a bit of fun to my screen porch with an easy outdoor porch light!
  • I used 2 large & 3 medium grapevine balls. Two strands of white lights (50 count) with brown wires make these little orbs glow-a birch branch holds the lights and burlap ribbon hold up the branch!
  • I threaded the lights into the balls and tied them in place with garden twine to make sure the glow was uniform...
  • It's easy to get the lights inside the grapevine by gently moving the tiny vines apart.
  • Balancing a birch branch between 2 chairs, I played around with the placement of the balls (which are attached with twine) until I liked the look...
  • I ran the cord up the twine and connected it to a white extension cord that I hid between one of the loops of burlap ribbon which holds the branch. (the other end of the burlap ribbon is attached to the ceiling w/ eye hooks)
  • The light makes such a nice glow and doesn't obstruct our view during the day! 1

Easy DIY Outdoor Light!

I'm doing a screen porch makeover at the moment and wanted to add a bit of light over the drop-leaf table. Using some grapevine balls and white lights with brown wires I put together an little porch chandy in no time!

Patriotic Landscaping Memorial Day or July 4th Ideas!

I built this brick area in front with extra pavers so I could create an area that the lawn man didn't have to move things when he came to mow. This was done with mostly yard sale items or ...»
items I was not using. The boat is one of those book cases for a childs room I bought for $5. The fence posts were $2 for the 4. The planters are tin paint cans from the hardware store or pots I had lying around. The flag pole is a metal pipe I wrapped in blue rope. The solar lights and small flags are from the $ store. Everything, (boat, planters, fence posts) was all done with red/white/blue spray paint. The Nantucket Boat Ferry sign has been stored in my shed for years. The red/white/blue flowers were all about $45. The flag is an honor flag purchased at the museum which has the names of all of the 9-11 victims embedded within. The dog is not included as I tell him it's a good thing he was free as I now call him the $25K-nine!
