Gardening: What can I do to improve my soil. It is mostly clay.

I am trying to start all over with my flower bed that is up against the back of my house but the clay soil is horrible for growing anything. Any ideas on improving the soil or what to grow?

Mix sand into the soil, doesn't allow the clay to clump, allows roots to spread

Check out this article I wrote. ...»

    http://www.networx.com/article/start-cleanin...

One point I like to point out to clients when working on tile projects is the "appropriate" grout color choice. White should never really be used in any floor type of setting, the work needed to keep it white will be a full time job. When we tiled our cabins floor we actually took a sample of the soil there and picked a grout color that matched it. In our case that happened to be Tobacco brown.

Gardening: Suggestions for this patch where it is difficult to grow plants.

I have this patch which was created to grow vegetables. In the past, I have tried to grow and nothing works here except this reed like plant ( I don't know the name of this plant). This patch is under the shade of a lemon tree and in the west side of the yard mostly in the shade. Please give me suggestions as to whether tilling is needed for growing plants or what else can be done to this area.
