Outdoor Living: Cheapest way to make a large retaining wall

I have almost 1/3 of an acre backyard that I will be re-establishing soon, and one of the projects will be a 2-3 ft tall retaining wall that will be approx. 25 feet in length - it will be very visible! What are some attractive and less costly ideas? (I'm putting tiers into a sloped yard hoping to correct the drainage problems.) the concrete is gone and the sand will be mixed in with new top soil and mulch. The wall will follow the far curve and extend out 10-15 ft.

  • My home's patio is pretty, but it lacks privacy. (The fence behind it separates my home's yard from a playground.)

Outdoor Living: How to Get Privacy for a Patio and a Chain Link Fence

Hi! A chain link fence separates my home's backyard from a busy playground. I've planted schip laurels for privacy, but my home's backyard still has next to no privacy. I used to have a tarp on the fence, but it didn't last long. Is there something else I can do to provide privacy to our yard and patio? We are not allowed to plant vines on the fence.

Wow that is BIG! There is a couple of ways you can go about this. The first is to give it a ...»
radical cut at about 3 ft and see if anything comes back (chance of losing the entire shrub). Or you can cut it about 3 ft down from the top of the plant, then in a year or so do it again at about 1/2 the plant height. You could also do some selective branch pruning, taking off only the ones that are falling over, but you might end up with a lopsided bush. Tough decision there.
