Cleaning & Organization: Do you keep your dish drainer out at all times? If not, what works for you?

While cleaning up the breakfast dishes this morning I realized how much space my dish drainer takes up and how generally unattractive it looks. I have always kept it out at all times ...»
(with the exception of when we entertain & will have many people in the kitchen) but I'm realizing now what an awful eyesore it is any day of the week. To top it off, it is in clear view from my foyer / front door. We are a family of six so there are lots of dishes/pots washed daily but I need a better solution. What are some alternatives to this boring & ugly dish rack?

refrigerator magnets! I just HAVE to be able to see my pumpkin drawing my only grandchld made in K3. He is now 21 and sitting on Nana's lap is not the most important thing in his life! Can you believe concerts and college football are more fun to him! Who would have thought it! So I keep his drawing close! (I will admit that I keep my "stuff" on the side of the frig instead of the front). But when I had little ones, posting their drawings on the frig were a BIG honor! And I have to admit, I LOVED IT!

Gardening: Monarda for the south?

Attention southern gardeners: Has anyone grown Monarda "Peter's Purple" and, if so, what have your experiences been? I was perusing the new High Country Gardens catalog and they describe it as heat-tolerant (they list it as Zones 6-10) and completely mildew resistant, and it apparently has done very well in trials in Texas. Since monarda was far and away the biggest hummingbird attractor for me when I grew it in New York, I am tempted...

It is a native to a large part of the eastern half of the country and even into Mexico. It is ...»
considerably more tolerant of humidity than the cultivated monardas that often show up in the garden. As with many natives, there is considerable variation in the coloration of the bracts. i have seen some that were drop-dead gorgeous, and some that made little impact, so I think it is important to buy this plant in bloom. It is great for attracting butterflies and bees, so I am going to plant it in a back part of my garden devoted to that. Here's a good profile:

of the slate tiles are uneven. They are also porous (water dripped on them is absorbed). I sweep regularly, which isn't easy because of the uneven surfaces. I have mopped once with a Swiffer Wet Jet but I'm not sure whether that's OK to use repeatedly.

Stamped Concrete

I'm somewhat intrigued by stamped concrete that looks like wood planks. Can this be done over an existing concrete patio slab, or is it for new concrete pours only? Can anyone recommend anyone that does this in the Tampa, FL area?

and displace the weight. As for the hollow sound, the next time you put down wood, go to one of the big box stores and buy the "silent" pad that goes under the manufactured floors. We have that phony (manufactured/laminate?) flooring and are absolutely crazy about it. I guess we were lucky that we got a well built one! Ours went down in mid 2005 -- now almost 8 years old and looks brand new! Absolutely no problem! We put it down ourselves and have never had a separation problem or any problem!

Design & Décor: Furniture Re-Do Ideas

A few things about us / what I'm looking for --

1) I'm not the most handy. Okay, fine. I'm not handy at all. ;-) I'd like to change that, however.

2) My husband is deployed overseas, so manly help isn't an option right now.

3) I've never so much as held a paintbrush, so verrry simple projects & ideas are welcomed.

This is my first "learner" piece. It's a very inexpensive laminate-type piece I bought at Target years ...»

ago. I want to try it more for technique than for anything else.

I'm in love with the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Miss Mustard Seed paint effects. I'd love something like that, with wear spots. I'm not about brand new or matchy-matchy.

Our decorating style would best be described as vintage-rustic, I suppose. We love old things, but place the most value on items that are sentimental (i.e., passed down within the family as opposed to priceless & delicate antiques). We like to live in our home, if that makes sense. :-)
