Painting: Small Cabin leave it wood or go with paint and beadboard?

This 300 sq ft cabin is on a wooded lot across from a lake in Michigan. Would you leave the warm wood paneling or would you brighten the interior up even more by going for more of a ...»
cottage by the lake look and paint the walls a lighter color and add white beadboard? Because the wood paneling already has grooves in it that are pretty wide, do you think that would look weird with beadboard? If you suggested leaving the walls alone as you see them in these pictures, would you just go with soft, yet lighter colors for the furniture , bed coverings, etc.,?

Repurposing & Upcycling: Re-purposing a baby highchair

I have an wooden baby highchair that I used for both my daughters now 23 and 16...I just can't seem to part with the chair. It was initially white and I painted it for my second daughter. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can repurpose this special chair?

Gardening: Hummingbird Nest Helper

Good morning everyone,

I was just poking around on the web for all things hummingbird, and I ran across this darling cagey thing for pet hair for hummers to use to feather their nest. It was on Amazon and I don't know how to contact the poster. I am taking the liberty to snag her picture and show you and ask if anyone knows where I could find or how I could make such a thing. If the poster happens to be watching thank you so much for this awesome idea!

Plumbing: HELP!! We have an outdoor water faucet that is leaking terribly. We tried getting a new hose thinking that was it.

tightened- we tried to loosen it also sprayed bad and we could not get it off. Wwe are afraid to damage the pipe coming out of the house.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?? Does this take a plumber to come out and have to weld off the piece and put a new piece on?? I mean I am handy, but never tackled welding!

HELP!!!

Gardening: A friend sent a post from another site about killing weeds with vinegar. I'm posting the pix and part of the text from

that. This result happened in only one day. I brushed Roundup on some liriope volunteers over two weeks ago and they're just now puny and can be easily pulled out of the ground, but none are truly DEAD like in this photo. Will this be safe, do you think, if I put it on liriope volunteers and other weeds in my front yard? The yard has tree mulch, no grass, but lots of hostas, some hellebores, ferns, azaleas and other things. Guess I'd need to spray directly onto the potential victims, or brush it on with a sponge brush?

I tested boiling water vs vinegar on the weeds between our flagstone pavers along the driveway ...»
by pouring boiling water on the weeds on one side and vinegar on the other. Vinegar produced a quicker and longer lasting result; however with all our rain, record setting for the month of April, both sides are making a try at a comeback. I will have to wait for a forcast with at least 7 days of no rain for any hope of getting rid of the buggers. That probably means the end of May but I am determined to get rid of them. Round up and Weed be gone didn't work either. The flame thrower type weed burner could cause the stones to explode so that option is out as well. Next week I'll add the dish soap and salt to the vinegar to see if that helps.

Cleaning & Organization: Keeping home clean with dogs?

I have two dogs - a 50 pound cattle dog and a 5 pound chihuahua - both seniors. Both dogs shed like crazy and my little chihuahua has a bladder control issue. So my house is hairy and ...»
smells. I do what I can to keep them clean with regular baths and brushing and they are healthy. But it makes me embarrssed to have anyone over. There is hair everywhere (couches, etc) and I feel like I can't de-odor my house from the pee/pet smell. My house is very clean and minimal in stuff. My couch is an Ektorp from Ikea which means the cover can be washed but unfortunately it's black and the hair shows up everywhere even when using a removable blanket. All of the living areas of my house are wood floors and bedrooms are carpet. Thanks

  • View from the front corner of the house down toward the picket fence. You can't see it well in the picture, but the ground slopes down from here. 1
  • I was thinking of planting the hydrangeas along the unpainted fence. The neighbors have small bushes on the other side.
  • View from the picket fence toward the front of the house. You can also see the bushes at the top of the slope, and how this little area is hidden from the street. The bedroom window is at the top left corner of the picture.

Gardening: Need ideas for neglected part of yard

I need ideas for a neglected part of our yard for which we really have no use, but nevertheless needs to look prettier. It's a bit difficult to describe, but here goes. ...»

We have a picket fence separating the back part of our property from the front. It's about midway along our house, extending from the house to the fence along the property line. The picket fence is about 8 to 9 feet long.

In front of the picket fence, going toward the front of the house, the ground slopes sharply upward until it reaches the front corner of the house, where it becomes flat again. There are bushes at the top of the incline, so the area is essentially boxed in. The whole area measures roughly 8-9 feet by 20 feet.

So we can't access the area very easily, though I can squeeze through the bushes and clamber down the small incline to reach it. We don't need the area for anything. My husband doesn't want to use it for storage -- putting a small shed in there for the lawnmower and garden tools -- and it's shady, so I can't use it for a vegetable garden. And it can't be seen from the street.

There are two reasons I want to make it look prettier, however. It's directly outside a bedroom window, so I want there to be a nicer view, and the neighbors can see it very well.

I was thinking of planting something there that would require little or no work. Hydrangeas were one thought, since they do well in shade and bloom on their own year after year. I would plant them along the fence along the property line. There is already ivy in this little area, so I thought of keeping it trimmed between the hydrangeas and the house -- it would cover the ground and prevent erosion on the slope.

Does anyone have other ideas for this neglected, unnecessary part of our property that nevertheless needs to look better?

Gail, I have decided to clear out some of the ivy and plant two or three hydrangeas, because ...»
they don't require much maintenance, like you said, they do well in the shade, and they flower year after year. I'll leave some ivy on the slope to help with erosion, because it would certainly become a problem if I removed it there.

Trish, thanks for your suggestions, but this area has almost no access so we wouldn't be spending time there. I just wanted a nicer view from our window, and I think the hydrangeas will do the trick. I like your idea for bleeding hearts -- maybe I'll plant those as well.

I'll post pictures when it's done! Thanks, everyone.

Outdoor Living: Has anyone needed a solution for protecting metal furniture from the elements in an oceanfront location?

I recently got a call from a woman who enjoyed the porch that I'd created for a designer show house in Media Pa. She wanted me to design her porch on Long Beach Island. Almost all of the furnishing fit perfectly. However I had some concerns about the metal club chairs in the salt air. After doing some research I came across a product by Everbrite. Its a clear coating formulated to protect metal surfaces from salt air and corrosion. It is available in satin and matte finish and can be ...»
sprayed on. I'm so glad that I will be able to give her the look that she loves with confidence that she and her family will be able to enjoy it for years to come..
