Gardening: Front Flower Bed, Need Ideas Please

I had a small dogwood tree here and the winter got it after 10 yrs. I would love something like that or another small blooming tree that would do well in full hot sun in the summer, No shade here.

I love the fragrance of the Gardenias!! I have also had a hard time growing these. It seems ...»
like they thrive on neglect (which I can't give them! ha!). It seems like people who can't grow much can grow these! Where I live they do best along the sides of the walkways to the door. I think they like the protection. I now have a big beautiful one that is in full bloom. It is about 5 years old. I have it in a whiskey barrel and it receives only a couple of hours of sun in the afternoon. I'm just happy to have the one, as so many have died that I've planted. This one is staying put.

  • The blooms are smaller and pale compared to last year. Also, I have had it at least 4 years and would think it should be bigger.

Gardening: Poor blooms on Nellie Moser clematis

My Nellie Moser clematis, the kind with the pink and white stripes, did not bloom well this year. The flowers were smaller, color washed out, and didn't last long at all. It did well last year but still isn't a very big plant for as long as I have had it. I have it growing behind a fairly large azalea, to shade the roots, but I am wondering if the azalea is too big, and blocking too much sun from the plant. Could this be the problem or are there other reasons for a clematis to not do well?

Gardening: I want to overseed a dying lawn

The front lawn I had enough $$ to lay good local new sod. I don't have the money to do the back...besides the front has inground sprinklers not so much the back.

Last year I tried all of the hints and helps and did everything they asked and NOTHING! This year I did my own thing...I want to take wagers on if you think it will take or not..

Seed is Scott's Hardy grass seed (given to me by someone locally who has used it and worked perfectly) ...»

I just enlarged your photo and it actually looks like your lawn is pretty decent. Overseeding ...»
can be a great idea, and given your soil additions, can't hurt. Preventing thatch (deep watering) would be a goal, too.

I get sick of weeds, too. But someone brought it to my OCD attention that a prefect, grass-only lawn is a product of Scott's, not nature. So... I keep buying yarrow and clover seed and putting it down. I'm dealing with 3 of 6 landscaped acres, so it's slow going. I did learn if I mow at 5" it takes the little clover flowers off and I have the greenest, most moist lawn!

    Good luck! :)

Jayme this is from American Iris Society as Douglas mentioned: ...»

Fungal Leaf Spot presents as small circular to oval spots on the leaves, turning yellowish to brown and often developing a distinct red-brown border. The pathogen is Didymellina macrospora. It can affect all bearded irises, Siberians, I. versicolor and the xiphiums, known as Dutch irises. The more rain you have the more prevalent it becomes. It is easy to control with the use of a fungicide and a sticker-spreader in your sprayer. Apply in the fall and early spring before infection. If infected, tip cut the affected leaves and apply again. Maneb have been proven effective. Check with your local authorities as to pesticide and fungicide use.

Gardening: Can Anyone Tell Me What Type of Plant This Is?

I was given this plant a few days ago, but was not told what type it was, aside from it being an indoor plant. When I received the plant, the leaves were almost black with bugs and the starting to turn a yellow color. I washed the leaves last night which seemed to help it a bit, but the leaves are still turning yellow. The plant was bone dry, so I watered it a bit and put it in a sunny location, but not direct sun light. There are also little bulbs that are there, but the gal that gave ...»
