How to Paint Vintage Metal Chairs

I have had these chairs for years. They were old when I got them! I have painted them several times, but the paint just chips right off. This time, I took all of the right steps to make that paint hold on tight!

  • using a clean glass jar, apply removable adhesive labels of your choice (i used round labels from the office supply store)
  • turn your jar upside down to prevent paint overspray + apply several light coats
  • once dry, gently remove the labels
  • add a layer of glass floral beads or sand. this protects your surface from heat damage from a long-burning candle

  • This is the pond in front of our house. Built by previous owners. Fun, but dirty w/the trees surrounding.
  • Front of house w/large garden in front, and to the side. Entry gate is to the left of the corner of the house. Hoping to build deck along the length of house

Outdoor Living: Our Front Yard Pond and Other Projects

We just purchased this house and it has a great 3/4 acre yard with a pond in front. It has a fountain, w/a spray fountain (see white pvc pipe in pic). We like it OK, but it is dirty as it ...»
is under the trees and gets lots of leaves in it. The fountain leaks in back and the water keeps getting lower and lower, probably a hole in the liner somewhere.

So we are thinking of filling in the pond w/small red lava landscaping rock on bottom (lots of this in a garden we are redoing and I dislike it), then river rocks on top w/the fountain still bubbling up in the middle. Any suggestions on how to do this properly so that the water will not leak out, and we don't have to continue to refill the water level? Thanks for any ideas, I live in Wyoming so there is LOTS of snow in the winter and it is only used in the summer months.

Now we are also going to redo the front of the house w/a full length deck (eventually a roof over it). Have some cinder blocks, and thought about using wood decking over them w/the blocks as support. Do we need to place the blocks in sand to level? Or how should we proceed?

Kris, As a pond contractor for nearly 10 years I agree that hiring a pond contractor is a good ...»
idea for most people but if you are at all handy you can do this yourself. The very first thing you need to do is find out where the leak is. When you say the "fountain" leaks in back are you referring to the waterfall? If so your liner may not be the issue. When the pump is off does the pond still go down or is it holding water? If it is holding water than the waterfall is your only leak. Lava rock not only is abrasive but they "decompose" over time and can clog your pump. Look into Atlantic Water Gardens Ecoblox for the bottom of the pond and a pump vault to protect your pump. then cover the top with the gravel/river rock. If it was me I would knock down the waterfall and once you have "pit" filled in where the white pipe is install a bubbling urn or a large boulder with a hole drilled through it for the pipe. It will give you more of a focal point. As for the preform plastic "drop in" types of ponds they tend to crack and break much more frequently than you find tears in rubber liner. Can't wait to see what you come up with for this space.

  • This is an easy to make yard decoration that sparkles in the sunlight
  • These are the Plastic Mirror Stars, found at Michaels, that inspired the project
  • 3 different sized Terracotta pots
  • Base coat the pots, inside & out, with white acrylic paint to ensure that the paint color used is true
  • 2 coats of paint, inside & out, on each pot
  • Spray with 2 light coats of Krylon clear coat so that the 'chime' can be used outdoors.
  • Using Kwik Seal Clear Caulk to 'glue' on rhinestone stars makes them hold up to summer showers
  • Use nylon cord, tri-beads, & wooden beads to space the 3 pots
  • Tie the cord to an 'S' hook to hang outside

  • This is the piece of silverware that started this odd addiction.
  • First you need to find some silverware suitable for stamping. In my experience it seems like silverplated silverware is easier to stamp than stainless steel. Vintage silverplate can be found at thrift stores, estate sales, etc.
  • I bought my 36 piece 1/8" steel stamping set at Harbor Freight. The regular price is around $10, but is frequently on sale for around $5. The stamps are long pieces of steel with a letter or number on the end.
  • Supplies needed
  • I drew a line down the middle of the knife so I could somewhat keep the letters lined up. BTW, I don't go for perfection, to me it's more of a handmade look.
  • I figured out the middle letter of the word I was going to stamp and stamped that letter first. Just give the stamp a good old whack with the hammer. And then work out from there.
  • When I was done, I rubbed some marker onto the letters and then wiped the excess off with a paper towel. You don't have to do this step, but I found it made the letters pop out visually a little more.
  • Great for plant markers
  • Perfect for holding photos

My Silverware Stamping Addiction

Stamped silverware can be used for all sorts of things. From plant markers to wedding gifts for the bride and groom to labeling cheeses for a fancy schamcy party. And it's super easy to ...»
do!

You'll need the stamps, a piece of silverware, a hammer of some kind - I prefer a larger metal mallet type hammer (better to smash your fingers with), a magic marker, something to stamp onto (I used a small brass block that I found in the garage) and for safety you should wear gloves and safety glasses.

Instructions are below the photos and a much more detailed tutorial is on my blog post.

Oh, and I've had quite a few people asking on my blog about using them for weddings (stamping Mr. and Mrs. on forks or wedding dates, etc). Avery cute idea, BTW. I would say if you are expecting people to eat with them, I would skip the steps about using a magic marker, because that could be toxic. And you certainly don't want to start the marriage off on a bad note. If you still want to do the last step where you "color" them in a little, you could use liquid food coloring and wipe it into the letters a little.

Have fun stamping. Watch out for your thumbs and please wear you safety gear!

  • I started by removing the covers and washing them.
  • I labeled the "fluff" taken from the back cushions so I wouldn't get confused when it was time to re-stuff.
  • I used this quilt batting ($9.99 at Walmart) to beef up the cushions.
  • I simply trimmed the batting and wrapped it around the bottom cushions to boost their fluff-ability. Yep. That's the technical term. ;)
  • I put the covers back on the new beefed-up cushions and now my couch looks as good as new.
