Windows & Doors: My husband and I are looking at getting new windows for our house.

Would it be more cost effective to buy them at Home Depot or Lowe's and get a contractor to install them, or would it be better to go with a window company that does it all? And does anyone have any general window-buying tips?

You can't go wrong with PELLA products. We live on the coast, on the water. Our home is over ...»
30 years old; we built with Pella and have upgraded/remodeled several times - always using PELLA. They are well worth the $$. Our experience with their customer service has been OUTSTANDING!! Cannot advise on experience with Home Depot or Lowe's and contractor. We went directly to PELLA for each remodel and we have had a very good contractor who is experience in PELLA installation. I think that is what you should be looking for - experienced contractor....

Outdoor Living: Easiest and most cost efficient way to enlose an area that faces NORTH (Bogue Sound, NC).

Want a open, Lanai effect but able to close if "hurricane threat". (Area is glass-enclosed on 3 sides)

There are a number of types of products that can offer Hurricane Protection. The easiest type ...»
would be Roll Shutters, which gives you immediate protection at the touch of a button, which also makes for great protection from any type of bad weather, since the shutter can be rolled down in seconds. Also, the Crimsafe Brand of Hurricane Screens is a product that can stay in place all the time for 24/7 protection, and offers ventilation and light. The stainless steel mesh has the appearance of a regular insect screen, but meets all security and hurricane codes. The least expensive type of protection would be the storm panels, which can be time consuming to put into place and have to be stored away when not in use. Accordion Shutters are also a good choice to enclose a large area, like a lanai, and are less costly than motorized shutters.
