About Me:

Discovered now that I'm in my 50's that I have some talent! Create my own stencils on my laptop and use them to make hand-painted signs. Also, my husband is enjoying his retirement creating all sorts of wood beauties. From woodturning ornaments, pens, boxes, etc.to building furniture.....some made from reclaimed pallets! I get to finish his beauties with paint and Briwax...after beating them up a little, because we love the primitive look!

Favorite area of home improvement:

Repurposing old stuff/junk into something new and fun.

  • Finally done applying all of the soil (10 yards worth)! Placed birdbath in center-this wil be one focal point in my dream garden! Watered the soil.

Transforming my Backyard into a Secret Garden- Part 1

Love my backyard, but after a rainstorm it turns into a lake! I've decided to completely get rid of the grass and transform it into a beautiful, peaceful flower garden retreat. I will not ...»
only be adding soil to the low spots which will help redirect the water, but I will create a beautiful space where I would much rather spend my time with the flowers and plants than cutting the grass :) Huge undertaking, but I am psyched up for it!

So far, I have used some "lasagna gardening" techniques- covered all of the grass (and weeds!) with newspaper, cardboard or paper yard refuse bags. Second step, top that with garden soil mix. I am waiting until I'm sure there are no more frost advisories before I start to plant my flowers and vines. I've started collecting the seedlings I'm going to plant as well as growing some from seeds. (I've got an ENTIRE back yard to fill with flowers!!!) I've been planning my secret garden layout and I can't wait until I can actually start planting my flowers! Wish me luck!

  • The before picture really doen't show how bad the deck was!!!!

I used "Restore" on my deck this past summer. Comes in multiple colors, and did exactly what I was told it would do -

filled in cracks, covered well - no sanding invoived, Just powerwash, lite scrubbing at "mossy areas" and bang! I chose to not back roll the second coat and leave the finish product textured, to help when walking on it in icy conditions.

An Upholstered Chair That Has a Story To Tell

I reupholstered my grandparent's chair. I was hoping to find a treasure under the original upholstery, but didn't find a thing. That's when I decided to write my grandparent's story ...»
underneath the upholstery. This will give the next person who reupholsters the chair some history about who owned it and a glimpse into their lives. It won't just be an ordinary chair, it will be a chair with a story to tell.

DIY Curtain Rod for Oversize Windows

Window treatments for oversize windows can be very expensive. When I was looking to outfit the 10 foot window in our dining room, I was shocked at how expensive longer curtain rods were, ...»
so I made my own using electrical conduit, spray paint, and some vintage drawer knobs.

Check out the tutorial!

OK, let's try that again LOL! Great article! We just did this with two windows and LOVE it! ...»
I just hadn't come up with how to do finials. Thanks for the cork idea...simple but brilliant! BTW, I don't sew either, so my curtains are all dropcloths! ;) DH built a shelf/rod combo over each window. I love the look, plus it's another spot to decorate and/or add storage. I'm off to find some vintage drawer pulls ! ;)

THE IMPATIEN Dilemma

Whether you are a garden novice or a veteran gardener, you may be aware of the sad fact that our shade garden annual favorite is being denied life by the nasty downy mildew that spreads ...»
all across our nation now. Even if you save your own Impatien seed and keep other garden center plants away from your carefully and lovingly tended imps, you are still vulnerable as this is an airborn pathogen that will stay in your soil from one season to the next. It starts on the underside of the plant where you don't always see it. You won't notice until the leaves turn yellow and fall off, the plant withering and dying. There is nothing as of yet that effectively will combat the virulent attack.

This is my list of alternatives to the dilemma of what to plant to give that same heavenly splash of color in the shade garden.

My top picks are

1) Begonia , green wax leaf, tuberous , angel and dragon wing

2) Torenia

3) Browallia

4) New guinea impatien

5) Diascia

6) Fuschia

7) Balsam

8) Shade coleus

9) Lobelia

10) Euphorbia 'diamond frost'

11) Geraniums

12) Ageratum

13) Caladiums

14) Strobilanthes

15) Fan Flower(Scaevola)

There are a bunch more that will take part shade such as Nicotiana, Salvia, and Sweet Williams.

I will miss the sweet sweet impatien, but while the experts search for a cure, it gives us all the opportunity to step out of our garden box and into the wild new territory of DIFFERENT and awesome plants that will put a smile on our garden faces.#itchingforspring

Oh, I'm so sad to hear this! We used to have gorgeous beds of impatience back home (PA/NY ...»
border). I tried them in Tucson and they were pitiful even in winter, so I never even tried them here in Texas. Thus I had no idea of this problem! Here's hoping the experts find a cure sooner rather than later! Your list will help folks fill the void, I'm sure.
