  • Tip #3 ecosystem: provide a balanced ecosystem for your pond with the addition of plants and fish. Aquatic plants will take the nutrients out of the water that algae compete for and the fish will fertilize the plants!

Landscaping: How do I find someone who won't rip me off to do landscape work?

My yard took a hit by the October storm Sandy and needs a big clean up.... more than I want to take on, my beds flooded and washed all my mulch out into my stone ( I have a stone yard not lawn ) I am sure some plants will have been damaged by the salt water and need to be removed / replaced. I also need house and pavers power washed. Are there people who do all of this work or do I need to hire different people? What questions should I ask of potential contractor? It's a very small ...»

neighbors and see if there is a local landscape maintenance company that others are using and are already working in your area. They may or may not be able to do everything on your list. Keep in mind that spring is a busy time and you may have to wait to get the work done. Never too early to start planning.

Landscaping: Landscaping Hardscapes

Any Ideas what kind of hardscape I should use to replace our aging stone work? Want it to compliment the house.

What a gorgeous house you have Gabriel R ...»
! It looks like a historical home which I am a big fan of (I happen to live in one too). With that said, I would use materials that were around during the construction of your house. There are many different colors of Clay Bricks or you could go with a Natural Bluestone or Slate. I would take a picture of your house along with some extra bricks you might happen to have laying around and go down to the Brick yard and find something you like.

Gardening: My husband wants a cherry tree

Looking for advice on Cherry Tree's. I live in Zone 5 (Chicago Area). The planting would be on North side of our house. I've seen on-line that there are many different varieties. Any advice for me?

shade and provide you with fruit. It does not appear to require a lot of insectides etc to maintain it and this is a problem with many fruit trees if you want to eat the fruit. What fruit you do not eat, will have to be picked up in the fall. Very good choice Douglas!
