Gardening: What is this plant?

This plant (the two bright green spikey-looking ones) grows in the area of WV where my husband is from, but we have no idea what it is. He says it reseeds itself every year and the plant itself gets very tall, around 4 or 5 feet. I would appreciate any comments.

Front Flower Bed, Need Ideas Please

I had a small dogwood tree here and the winter got it after 10 yrs. I would love something like that or another small blooming tree that would do well in full hot sun in the summer, No shade here.

How about a Chaste Tree or a Tree Form Hydrangea which would leave you room for planting ...»
underneath. The Limelight Hydrangea will take a sun location. Here is a link to some information on the Chaste Tree and the picture below is a picture of my Tree Form Hydrangea from last year.http://www.duncheons.com/showcase_plant/october_2011/october_2011_showcase.html

  • Erosion was a real problem. Not to mention the dirt the builders brought in. Very sticky clay plus a ton of rocks.
  • This is what we had to work with.
  • We dug out and built these tiers by hand one shovel at a time! We took the Garden of Eden Film approach and brought in compost plus year old mulch to serve as a natural "covering". So we rarely water our garden.

radical cut at about 3 ft and see if anything comes back (chance of losing the entire shrub). Or you can cut it about 3 ft down from the top of the plant, then in a year or so do it again at about 1/2 the plant height. You could also do some selective branch pruning, taking off only the ones that are falling over, but you might end up with a lopsided bush. Tough decision there.

they can be found almost anywhere, Ace Hardware would probably have them, or you can also order them on line. I am looking at the package now and it says they can be used in Fish habitats, flower pots, birdbaths.I think the active ingredient is Bt. Be sure to check for things around your house that collects water, even English Ivy cups water and makes a breeding haven for the little buggers.
