Gardening: cilantro

When Home Depot had its 5/$10 vegs and herbs last week I bought a variety. I like cilantro

and wanted to grow my own. When I got home the cilantro was aready wilting. I gave it ...»

the sun and watering like the other plants but it continues to deteriorate. I was back at HD today looking at more herbs and the 3 remaining cilantro looked about as bad as mine. I dont have any hopes of reviving it nor do I plan to buy it again unless I can find out what went wrong. I'm along the gulf coast and wondered if it is a cool season plant and was already on the way out when I bought it.

It was a Bonnie plant which means you plant the whole thing, no plastic pot ...»

I'll wait until fall to buy it again. I do not know why places like Home Depot and Lowes get plants that do not do well here, or the wrong season

Gardening: raised garden beds

I want a raised bed for my vegetables and herbs. I need something really simple to put together or an idea of a product already out there. I'm along the gulf coast so the plants will get ...»
big. I also have to keep in mind something that will not attract termites.

Hopefully the fire ants wont move in either.

Judith B our neighbour has one ...»
made of patio stones - standing on their sides. They used connectors from lee valley tools and ordered the stones separately - http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx...

they chose plain concrete so looks like something under construction, but with the right choice of stone it could add a lot of character to the yard.

They look like 2'X2' stones - 2 wide and 4 long. You could add these one at a time to assess how many you want.

Found these sites as well - stone bed

    http://www.houzz.com/photos/808087/G-Residen...

    This site uses cement blocks

    http://www.almanac.com/blog/gardening-blog/r...

    and this site too

    http://www.ehow.com/how_12035285_build-simpl...

    No attraction to termites.

Do post a pic of what you do. Thanks for posting :)

Windows & Doors: door hardware

How do you keep the brass toned finish from wearing off doorknobs? We just got replacements for our storm door and the last ones looked terrible. Probably doesnt help that we live along the gulf coast with the heat and humidity

Gardening: Son wants to put Christmas lights at the base of our crepe myrtles so the lights shine up onto the branches.

We were thinking of something to go around the trees but cannot come up with any good workable ideas. I've googled planters and benches but nothing practical or affordable or not take a ...»
lot of work I can find. These are led lights and they must be fixed so they shine up and not at the passing drivers on my street.

Actually we do have cup hooks on the fascia. And it works if you don't mind the storm door ...»
catching the lights every time you open the door. I was hoping to still attach the lights to the gutters to avoid that. The gutter guard is mesh and it goes right up to the edge of the gutter so there is no way to use gutter clips

Gardening: how do I help my gardenia

Isaac came through here and besides stripping my crepe myrtles, it partially uprooted my tall gardenia I have had for 25 years. We have tried to upright it and tied it to one of the ...»
storm shutters. It appears to have been turned 90 degrees (having been laid over by the winds, from the north and south). its big and heavy and I want to know the best way to reroot it. So far it doesnt show signs of stress but its early. The ground of course is a muddy mess.

You are right DH. For a general bed amendment out here, I use all three. Our soils are quite ...»
acidic here. I still like 50% Natures Helper. My axaleas, rhodos, camellias are thriving and so gorgeous now. Although, with the finicky nature of the rhodos, I can't let them here me praise them.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: We have 2 bedrooms on the same circuit and there are problems in one room.

My son has things plugged into a ups and sometimes it will start beeping. Nothing new plugged in, it just starts and its sporadic. It was suggested the outlets be checked to see if ...»
anything is loose. An electrician is not in our budget right now. Is that something we can (or should) do? The other bedroom has no signs of any problems.

Hi Judith, A UPS unit will "beep" for several reasons. Inconsistent AC voltage is one and ...»
can be caused by the reasons listed by the members above, loose wiring, old & worn outlets that don't allow the plug to make good contact, or you could also be getting power surges associated with your utility company or loose connections at your electrical service. The other common cause of a UPS "beeping" is that the internal battery may be reaching the end of its life. The unit will "beep" to indicate that you need to change it our. If you still have your paperwork that came with the unit, it will likely have a few trouble shooting tips that you can check out as well.

Gardening: how do I handle Crepe myrtle suckers? My 4 trees are almost 25 years old (3 healthy - 1

dying down). I cannot find sucker stop anywhere around here. I was wondering if stump and vine killer would work? I have dug down around the base of the trees and cut back as much of ...»
the suckers as I can. I'm getting ready to put in my mums and lantana in flower beds around the trees and want to start soon.
