  • Just look at how perfect this mix is.... homemade :)

Make your own Potting Mix

I rarely buy bags of potting soil from the garden center...I just make my own using a few simple ingredients. #garden #composting ...»

Start with compost, add peat, perlite and fertilizer and mix well.

You can buy a big bale of compressed peat and large bag of perlite, depending on how much you need, these could last you quite a few seasons.

The fertilizer could be a slow release formula or a generic all purpose. I add more fertilizer depending on application ( hanging baskets for instance would get a handful more at planting time.

I just get in there with my garden gloved hands and give it a good mixing pulling out any large pieces that need more time to cook in the compost.

Your ratio should be about:

Compost= 60%

Peat= 30%

Perlite=10%

+ a few handfuls or more of fertilizer pending on size of mix.

  • Put some plastic in the bottom of your pot to keep it from leaking, then some rocks, then planting mix or a mix of dirt and sand. Then if you want to put polished stones or something on top, before you put the plants in.
  • To root your plant, make sure the bottom of the "blossom" is in the water. As shown in the picture above. Check your vessel often to be sure the plant is reaching the water. Also allow them get some natural light.
  • For my last tip. Did you know if the petals break off, you can place them in moist soil and they will begin to root? Once again, just keep them in a moist soil with some light. This pot is outside on my porch. 1

GOT HILL / NO PROBLEM

If you are lucky enough to have a slope on your property and fortunate that it is in your backyard, great. If you do not have a hill, we can create one. Enjoy

Wondrous Peacock Topiaries

One of my favorite facebook pages for gardening inspiration is Old Moss Woman's Secret Garden. I'm still not sure exactly who Old Moss Woman is. Her page is wonderfully mysterious to me, ...»
all I know is that she collects and shares the most incredible photos of nature and gardening and posts them.

I messaged her to ask for permission to share here which she graciously granted. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Here's her page if you'd like to check it out:

Should I tear these out?

I have had these hostas for 6 years and every year this happens-I have tried eggshells and spraying. This is the area I would like to use for a small frog pond(eventually) and am ...»
wondering if I plant something else here will the new plants also look like this? My other plants (fern and hardy cyclamen) ae healthy and untouched. This part of the bed gets filtered morning light-aft. shade, and full evening light. Any suggestions on replacement plants? I would like something around the same height or up to 3 in. higher than the hostas.

New garden bed from pool hole

We removed our pool earlier this year and I saw the perfect opportunity for a new garden bed. We used the old pool enclosure for fencing and added a garden gate that we painted white. It is way more fun maintaining a garden than maintaining a pool that was rarely being used!!
