  • Every Spring, I buy Boston ferns in hanging baskets at Lowe's or Home Depot. 2
  • My first secret is to remove the plastic pot they come in and replant them using a good-quality potting mix.
  • I prefer to use coir-lined wire baskets. 3
  • My BEST secret is to install a Rainbird slow-drip automatic watering system. It's a DIY project. Really. See the black tubes hanging down from the porch ceiling? When the ferns are hung, the tubes are placed above them. 2
  • The tubing is connected to a timer and then to a standard faucet. (Mine's in the basement, but yours can be anywhere.) In the heat of Summer, the timer is set to water twice a day for 10 minutes.
  • This pic was taken in October last year -- after a hot Summer. Ferns as large and lush as ever. Yours can be, too! Check out my blog link for more step-by-step pics. 2

  • This shady side yard AND our sunny flower beds stay looking good even through the hot Summer. What's the secret?
  • A Rainbird automatic watering system we purchased from Home Depot -- and it's a DIY project! 1
  • Here's a close-up of one of the spray heads.
  • See how gently it mists the plants? Just as I showed you with the hanging ferns, the system is connected to a water faucet and a timer. In the heat of Summer, we water twice a day for 10 minutes each time.
  • You can even use this system with your container plants. Here's a close-up of a drip head.
  • And here's a pot of strawberries with a spray-style head. Guess what? I'm headed out of town soon, and I don't have to ask a neighbor to water the plants -- or come home to dead ones! Wouldn't you like to say the same? You can!

Revamp that large bathroom mirror

I added shelves and some trim to dress up the large bathroom mirror.

*Options I considered for this project: ...»

We considered replacing the mirror altogether, but decided to go the less expensive route first and see how long it would buy us.

*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:

I didn't know how well the mirror was attached to the wall. I also didn't know how well my adhesive would adhere to the mirror and trim.

* Cost Comments:

1"x4" MDF (32 ft) - $20

1/2 birch plywd - $15

Trim (40 ft) - $20

Crown (3 ft) - $4.50

Lights - $60

*My motivation to do this project:

The mirror was large and an eye sore. We wanted something a little nicer.

*Project Steps:

The first step was to replace the single light fixture with matching twin ones. I ran the wiring, secured the boxes and mounted the new lights. This was required due to the shelving unit. I then measured out the surface and determined the size of the shelving unit. Then I purchased the materials and started designing as I cut. The shelving unit was assembled and attached first. It was ~2 inches higher than the mirror and secured to a stud to help support the mirror against the wall. The trim and molding was measured, cut and secured using GOOP adhesive and tape to hold in place until it was dry.

Advice:

Don't assume the mirror is attached to the wall well enough to hold the additional weight. Make sure it is supported fully.

Do measure twice and cut once.

Materials:

Wood, MDF, Trim - $0.00

Light fixtures - $0.00

Vintage Crate and Wire Basket Shelves

I made these super easy shelves from vintage soda crates and vintage wire baskets. All you have to do is: ...»

- Drill 2 holes in each crate (I drilled mine in the center back plank of the crate on either side)

- Attach crate to the wall with screws and anchors (if needed) using the holes you drilled in the crate.

- Repeat the process and hang more crates side by side or on top of each other either horizontally or vertically.

- Combine the crates with some vintage wire baskets, by drilling two holes and anchors/screws in the wall, hang basket on screws.

- Decorate to your heart's content!
