Great article. We found that our house, built in the late 80s had ground wires that existed, ...»
but were never connected. I'm not sure how it ever passed the electrical inspection when it was built. Thankfully, we changed out several light switces to the Decor rocker switch types and upgraded to matching outlets at the same time and discovered this early on. When we had a couple of light switches we hadn't changed upstairs begin to making a "popping" sound when they were switched on and off, we realized those weren't connected either. It was a bit of a pain to check every outlet and switch in the house, and change the ones out that exhibited problems, but worth the time when you consider your safety.

Carpenter Bee Trap

I wanted to hold off on posting this until I got some successful responses but it does look like DIY carpenter bee traps work. Google "No Sting Bee Trap" for a video but here are some examples sent to me by folks who've made one themselves.

Electrical and water in same trench?

Our church is wanting to run a water line and electrical service out to the corner of the lot that is about 300 ft in distance. Can the electrical and water line (PVC) be run in the same ...»
trench? We will drain the water line each winter, so how deep does it need to be?

The National Electrical Code does not specify whether power and water can or cannot be run in ...»
the same trench. I have had inspectors give different views on the acceptance of this topic. Some say yes, others say no.

Certainly, running them in the same trench can save time, but can also cause major headaches in the future where maintenance is concerned. Water lines are generally run at a minimum depth in GA of 8" deep. Depending on the installation method, power must be installed at a minimum coverage depth of 18". If in the future you need to access the power line to make repairs, you run a real risk of cutting the waterline that rests on top before reaching the electric lines.

I tend to discourage running a power line in the same trench with any other utility. Though it may be accepted by the NEC, in the long run, it is not the best way.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: We have 2 bedrooms on the same circuit and there are problems in one room.

My son has things plugged into a ups and sometimes it will start beeping. Nothing new plugged in, it just starts and its sporadic. It was suggested the outlets be checked to see if ...»
anything is loose. An electrician is not in our budget right now. Is that something we can (or should) do? The other bedroom has no signs of any problems.

Hi Judith, A UPS unit will "beep" for several reasons. Inconsistent AC voltage is one and ...»
can be caused by the reasons listed by the members above, loose wiring, old & worn outlets that don't allow the plug to make good contact, or you could also be getting power surges associated with your utility company or loose connections at your electrical service. The other common cause of a UPS "beeping" is that the internal battery may be reaching the end of its life. The unit will "beep" to indicate that you need to change it our. If you still have your paperwork that came with the unit, it will likely have a few trouble shooting tips that you can check out as well.
