Great article. We found that our house, built in the late 80s had ground wires that existed, ...»
but were never connected. I'm not sure how it ever passed the electrical inspection when it was built. Thankfully, we changed out several light switces to the Decor rocker switch types and upgraded to matching outlets at the same time and discovered this early on. When we had a couple of light switches we hadn't changed upstairs begin to making a "popping" sound when they were switched on and off, we realized those weren't connected either. It was a bit of a pain to check every outlet and switch in the house, and change the ones out that exhibited problems, but worth the time when you consider your safety.

Belco is right on with this. Its all about the heat. The biggest issues come with fireplaces ...»
that are non-vented heating types. These fireplaces produce a lot of extra heat out the front and unless the TV is high enough or there is a large enough mantel above to divert the heat out and away from the set that would be one place not to install a set at.

The manufacture of the television will have max limits on heat near the set. Follow these instructions and allow for sufficient air flow around. As many times sets are placed into a frame of sorts without any air delivery to the back air vent holes in the TV and they end up overheating. And that advice goes for putting the TV in other locations besides just over the fireplace area.
