  and installed correctly. If open cell is used it should be only used as an air barrier where there are openings from the ceiling to the attic. If your thinking to insulate the roof to bring the attic into the building envelope, then yes its much better then fiberglass as long as you use closed cell fire resistant or coated insulation for at least two inches directly against the roof structure then open cell can be used to build up the R value as less cost. Combined around a six or seven inch foam barrier will give you the R-32 on the roof.
  Incorrectly done, foam can trap moisture and cause all sorts of unhealthy issues, but done properly it is the best type of insulation you can use.
  If your not thinking of doing the roof, which only needs to be done if you have AC or Heating equipment in the attic then just use foam to seal any air openings on floor of attic, put baffles along soffits, and install at least a R 32 insulation on the floor.

Who said its too late to worry about our energy costs

A recent spray foam job we did for a client shows that the owner saved over 42% on their heating bill by just air sealing the bottom sill area within the home. ... »
We had no access to the attic, but had we did get into that savings would have been close to 60% just on the heat alone!
Insulation was installed prior to this project on the sills, but we removed it and replaced it with four inches of closed cell with a R value of close to R 28.
Not only did the owner save money their comfort also increased which allows them to keep the thermostat lower saving even more money.
So before you decide to insulate, air seal all gaps, you can use spray foam in a can, caulking or simply call a company that does this type of work. It is more expensive as professionally installed spray foam runs around $1.50 per board foot and up, but the savings more then pay for the cost in the near future.

  wrap my mind around all the concepts. We currently have blown-in insulation. But I keep a lot of things in the attic (holiday decorations, furniture, kids stuff, etc.) so I have placed planks up there to make a floor. I was told this was bad. I am in the process of removing most (but not all) of these things. I would still like to keep some of the "flooring" I put up there for storage. What do you recommend as far as additional insulation? Yes, I have found some dark spots in the existing insulation. We have a new roof with a ridge vent and lots of extra vents were added. We used to have an attic fan but the roofer said it was a waste and took it off. This is all so confusing! I can't afford to put a lot of money into this but our house is very hot during the Georgia summers.

Any advantages for installing fiberglass batting insulation in the ceiling of a screened porch?

Is there any logic for installing fiberglass batting insulation between the rafters? Would it have any effect in reducing the amount of transfer heat coming from the roof and ceiling into screen porch area? Or would this be just a waste time and money. Would there any advantages or disadvantages in reducing the amount heat build-up on the electrical wiring, and recessed ceiling lights?
