Windows & Doors: My neighbors see straight into my house

I live in an apartment building in quite a dense neighborhood. One evening, when looking out my window, I realized I can see evert pixel of my neigbors washing machines driers, kitchens and showers if in the wrong side of the house (The photo attached is just an illustration, my camera just caught patches of light)

This means that all those 200 eyes of my neighbors see all my stuff too.

I would like a bit more of privacy, what you ...»

recommend I do?

I thought of installing curtains, but this would have some side-effects I might not be happy with (cost, forgetting to draw them and loosing a lot of sun light through out the day)

with the lights on in your apartment, your view will be blocked. The nice thing about sheers is they are relatively inexpensive, and can be pulled aside when you want a full view. Enjoy!

  • Dictionary page & chalkboard walls give the entryway a vintage look for about $20.

Book Page Entryway Walls

Our entryway had cheap, old, ugly paneling which made for a unpleasant entry into the house. Rather than tear it out and replace it, I covered the walls with vintage dictionary pages. See the before, during and after in the blog post.

Renter's Backsplash

I'am a RENTER and as a renter you are limited to your choices and Home Decor. I rent this townhouse and the owner came in and put in new counter tops and it left the kitchen half new & ...»
half old and I needed a pop of color. So I went online for a solution and I found several DIY for renter's backsplash. Saw the pictures and read the instructions and set off to find the following supplies: Table Placemats, and way to hold them in place, which I chose doublesided tape so it would be easy to remove without damaging the walls and a pair scissors. Since my kitchen is a small area I purchased 10 Benson Mills Bamboo Placement for a $1.00 each from Big Lots(I only used 8). Proceeded to apply double sided tape to placemats (make sure walls are clean) and put the mats in place on the wall. Here is my finished product. There was 1 inch gap between the cabinets. So I filled in the space with a cut down(cut to fit) version of the placemat. So far its working......

  • Clematis 'Perle d'Azur' trained up our mature maple tree.
  • Clematis 'Perle d'Azur',

How To Train a Clematis on a Tree Trunk

When I planted a climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris) near our maple tree, I also planted Clematis 'Perle d'Azur', thinking that it climb the tree using the hydrangea ...»
vine for support. I knew that Clematis climb by wrapping their wrists around small twigs, so other vines are wonderfully helpful for their successful climbing.

Here are some tips to get a Clematis started up your tree!:

-Choose a tree with rough bark, like a maple or oak. A smooth tree, like a cherry, with not get enough grip for your Clematis as it grows.

-Plant it on the shady side of the tree trunk and add compost. Mulch well. This enables you to give its roots the shade they need to start well.

-If you are not planting by another vine, then add a way for the Clematis to make it on to the tree bark. Use small bamboo canes, fishing line or twigs to make a scaffold for it to climb.

-Help the Clematis along by occasionally tucking its loose new growth into the rough bark of the maple.

It has turned out beautifully! I especially like the dreamy blue of Clematis 'Perle d'Azur' when viewed on the tree trunk against the blue sky. I hope yours does too!

  • A vanity without a mirror =(
  • Ta-Da! Black gloss paint hides all the damage to the body, and clear gloss on the bird's eye maple really makes it pop!
  • Not only is the mirror missing, it's pretty beat-up. I knew paint would be my best friend here.
  • I glued and clamped the veneer in several places; removed it in others that were too damaged to re-glue.
  • I just wasn't happy with the 3 coats of clear satin polyurethane--pic on R--so I gave it 1 coat of clear gloss. Wow. Just.........Wow.

From Workroom Storage to Center of Attention

I was told this was a waterfall vanity--but it's missing the mirror. To be honest, I really didn't like it, but I thought I might use it for storage in my work room. Plus, the price was reasonable.

Hubcap Flower Yard Art

All you need to make some fun, inexpensive yard art are some roadside hubcaps, spray paint and little creativity. ...»

Steps:

1. Clean off hubcaps with soap and water, then lightly sand.

2. Spray paint each hubcap in a bright color.

3. Use things you already have to add stems (sticks, shovel handles), leaves and more details to the flowers.

4. Assemble the flowers and add them to your yard.

After posting my kitchen tour, many people have asked what paint I used on the cabinets! I'm so happy many of you liked them. I used Sherwin Williams Cashmere paint. I blogged about all of the details.
