Outdoor Living: Advice on what to do with the pond

I bought this pond liner at a sale and dug a deep hole and placed it. We even did the electrical connection and the pond functioned for a while as a water fountain. We had to eventually drain the water and close the pond as lizards and such were falling into it. I am out of ideas as to how to revive this pond. Please give suggestions for doing something with this little pond.

AquaBlox in the "pond" and cover with a water feature. This will raise the feature so nothing falls in, but still allows the lizards, birds and other critters to get a drink. Also, we use Aquascape water treatments to keep the water clean and clear all year long. We have several ponds and build them for others and we have a lot of experience with fish ...»
loss. Blue herons are notorious for stealing fish. Once they find your pond, they will continue to return until their little fishing hole is empty. All of the above ideas are great ones, especially the fishing line and rope around the pond. We have also used fake heron decoys around the pond, as well as motion sensors. One product we have found to be the best is "The Scarecrow". It hooks to a garden hose and is motion activated to shoot an arc of water across the pond, scaring anything away (herons, raccoons, deer, cats, etc). As for raccoons, they can get large fish as well, but you will normally see remains around the pond. Also, they will not swim and will only wait on the side until something swims by to grab. Same goes for cats. We have had people steal them in the area, but in these cases, it's usually all at once and not spread over multiple days. I am terribly sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose any fish, but especially older ones that you've grown attached to. Good luck!

  • Tip #1 Use a long handled Skimmer Net to remove as many leaves as possible to prevent them from decomposing in the Pond. 1
  • Tip #2 Cut back all Aquatic Plants in the Pond including your lilies. You can also do this with Perennials located near the Pond. 1
  • Tip #3 If you do not intend to run your Pond during the winter, you can remove, Inspect and clean Filter Media & Pump. Place your Pump in a bucket of water and store in the basement to prevent the seals from drying out and protect it.

Bird Bath or Fountain?

This fountain sits atop an aquabasin (by Aquascape ) It is really easy to install and provides endless possibilities. Many pieces of pottery, and even rocks can be drilled and fitted with plumbing to sit atop these basins. In just a morning you can change the feel of an empty corner of your yard. Birds and pets love to drink from them. Because the water is always moving you don't have to worry about mosquitos!

  • Here is my tea pot fountain in full bloom. 10
  • We drilled a a hole in the tea pot and then threaded it. We attached flanges to a solid concrete block to support both the tea pot and the gold pan. The block is heavy enough to support the weight of the unit underwater. 5
  • We then built a support for the gold pan and dropped the unit into the whiskey barrel. We added a fountain pump and inserted tubing up through the tee on the bottom of the pipe that supports the tea pot and into the tea pot. 1
