Furniture: Need make over ideas

I have a vanity table that was given to me as a wedding gift 15 years ago. It is not really good for anything except being at "catch all" and sits in my entry since the seat broke many years ago. It's really showing its age. Any ideas on how to give it a make over?

  • Turn an unfinished birdhouse into something wonderful. Here we used different colours of stones and funnels on top.
  • You could also make a stone birdhouse using a piece of wide PVC pipe or a jug as the base. Use what you have and make it unique! See my blog for a full material list, instructions, and more ideas.

Make A Stone Birdhouse

These stone birdhouses are a wonderful addition to any garden and they are easy to make. Please consider this as a starting point for your imagination. There are so many possibilities! ...»
http://www.empressofdirt.net/how-to-make-a-s...

I've got full detailed instructions on my blog with recommended materials but here's the basics:

Materials: Birdhouse base, small stones (I buy bags of them at the dollar store), funnel for roof, silicone sealant to attach the stones, wood sealer.

Steps:

1. Start with a base. Here I used an unfinished birdhouse but you can also use a wide piece of PVC pipe, a jug, teapot...Anything with a the right shape.

2. If you're using a wooden birdhouse, first treat it with a wood sealant so it will last outdoors for many years.

3. Attach the stones using an outdoor silicone sealant (pick one that dries clear). Work from the bottom up so each row of stones rests on the ones below.

4. Add your roof and you're done!

More ideas: add a wee door; window boxes-create a whole fairy garden scene-; make the roof from moss or tiny cedar pieces or a folded licence plate...

I hope you'll share your ideas in the comments. Have fun!

PS: These birdhouses are intended as decorations only. See my blog for information on safe nesting boxes.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Rainfull lake

This lake forms with each rain in varying degrees. It lies between ours and the neighbor's yard and over the years has been leaving our yard growing larger in the neighbor's. We ...»
approached them about putting in a drainage system and were told they did that 20 years ago and weren't about to do it again. This happens up and down our street between houses and as a group we had gone before the village council with complaints. This past summer street work was done which included larger piping and grates being installed. We were told the problem was fixed.

This is the reason our sump pumps work so hard and never seem to last. Does anyone have any ideas? I am open to all suggestions except moving.

There must be a spring there somewhere. I would say build up around it so water doesn't ...»
leave,,,,,,drain it and watch where the water the water comes in I doubt it's from rainfall. Be a great duck pond and ice skating. My friend had the same problem they dug it down 2 ft and ducks fly to it all the time. and put up a bat house or frogs or you'll have plenty of dragonflies come anyway.

Staircase help!

In need of help! What do I do with this bizarre staircase enclosure? When we moved in three years go, this was what was used as an alternative to spindles and a bannister evidently. It is not weight-bearing, but we need to do something as we had twin boys this past April, and they are already on the move! As I'm sure you can guess, our budget is tiny, really non-existent actually, so anyway we can do this inexpensively would be great. I would rather not board it up as there is a great ...»
deal of light that comes from the window at the top of the stairs. Right now there is a treadmill on this wall, and no other place for it in the house either, so it can't move. Any idea is welcomed.

I love your kitchen! I would not apron the sink. The beadboard is a nice idea, did you know ...»
there is textured wallpaper that looks like beadbord at minimal cost and can be painted? I would raise toy table add a shelf to the bottom and put casters on it to use as a moveable island.

  • These Koi all come from the mud ponds of Japan, they are all "show stoppers" but are no longer being shown.
  • The pond is approximately 17 X 40 and it's a wonderful room to spend winter months in watching the kids swim. The pond is over 9 feet deep and was build as a swimming pool to pass all the WA state codes.
  • They hold Koi club meetings here once in awhile and when people drool it makes me feel wonderful to know I was the designer of all this beauty.
  • If you are at all familiar with Koi take a close look at these goegeous fish, they are beautiful.
  • Designing this waterfall was fun because I wanted something different but not so big it took away from the beauty of the fish.

I designed and built this Koi pond for my clients show fish. It is over 39,000 gallons
