  • "Beautiful! Glorious! Delicious!," say my plants.

Tips for Applying Mulch!

We will have 3 yards of mushroom compost delivered this week. When I begin filling my first wheelbarrow, I will think about the mulching techniques I have learned from many and various ...»
gardeners over the past 10 years...

What I have learned so far:

1. This is a lot of work! So make it count for double the time & money: add nutrients while you mulch.

2. Apply it 2-3 inches deep to suppress weeds for the growing season. You still may get some, but usually they are easier to pull out of the loose mulch than the firm soil.

3. Make sure to leave your plants some wiggle room. Apply the mulch deeply, but leave it at least one inch away from the crown of the plant. Leave 2-3 inches of space all around tree trunks.

4. Do not apply hot compost (meaning mushroom compost or other nutrient rich sources) to woodland (e.g. ferns) or silver-leaved plants (lavender).

5. For garden areas in which you want to encourage self-seeding plants, use a garden fork to "tickle in" some compost over those areas. Christopher Lloyd talks all about this in his book Succession Planting for Year-Round Pleasure. He also covers many other aspects of ornamental gardens. (It is my favorite garden book\!)

6. If you are mulching with well-rotted mushroom compost, be sure to save some extra for patching you lawn, topping off your vegetable beds (or containers), and even your ornamental containers.

7. You know you are a real gardener when just thinking of rotted plant and animal material gives you excited butterflies in your stomach... as opposed to the queasiness that most people feel in their stomachs.

Any more tips from my fellow gardeners?

Cleaning & Organization: Spice shelves in small cupboard

I am looking at organizing my spice cupboard and would like to utilize the most of a small cupboard. How would I make small shelves to place many in on back and sides?

Memorial for my dog

A friend who retired and is starting a business making Pet memorials and urns made this for me. It is a granite memorial for my dog that passed. It is of the Rainbow Bridge. It has my dog's name and picture of lab at the bottom.

Eco-friendly floor staining can transform cracks lines from dark to light. Our clients love this floor effect. Do you?

Our penny kitchen floor.

31,140 pennies, some grout, and a little sealant later, and we have a pretty cool kitchen floor. :) The pennies are all heads up, facing the same direction.

  • No weeding, raised beds make access easier, tomato plants love this method of gardening. Great for potatoes also, no digging! Anything that grows in the soil will do well in the bales also. 9
  • Early in the season, make the straw bales into a greenhouse, the "conditioning" of the bale below emits lots of heat during the process which warms the root zone and protects plants on the surface from frost. They love this up in the Arctic Circle in AK and Canada. See more at www.strawbalegardens.com 1
  • Planting annuals in the sides also makes the garden look attractive as well as productive. 6
  • Direct seeding into a seedbed of sterile Planting Mix on the surface of the bales. These seedlings grow rapidly due to the extra warmth from the decomposing bale below. Once seeded, cover with the plastic sheeting to protect from critters, frost, hard rain etc. See more information at www.strawbalegardens.com

Straw Bale Gardening, great in all climates from the Arctic to the Caribbean islands!

Straw Bale Gardening is essentially container gardening, without the cost of a container or the planting mix to fill it. Just buy a bale of straw, go through the "conditioning" process ...»
and plant, then water, then harvest, it is about that simple. Get the full details at www.strawbalegardens.com

Matt Cvitkovich has done several jobs for me. Recently doing custom stainless steel railing and inserts on my porch and deck. Previously, kitchen backsplash, and steel and iron end tables. Always prompt to the minute, follow through with every detail. Matt and his crew were always ...»
very polite, cleaned up every bit of debris from work site. Matt has a wonderful creative mind and can produce anything you can imagine in steel and mixed media. I cannot what till I can afford our next project. I highly recommend him for any job, big or small. See photos under Jackie H. Garner NC
