Remodeling: Cobb county residentual permits and inspections

I purchased a home with an unfinished basement. It has framing/installation/some electrical and roughed in plumbing. So I spoke with an Licensed electrician about wiring it out to code ...»
and him pulling a permit. He advised me if he pulled the permit it would have to be for the full job not just electric so it would be better if I pulled an home owners inspection permit because I'm doing the basement in stages. I called and requested this and I was told it was 71.50 a sq ft and 4.50 per something else. Well I have 1200 Sqt so just adding that together that tells me that can't be right as that is about 85,000 bucks. I question why it would be so much to to finish my basement and was told thats the system and they hung up on me. I called back and got someone else and rephased the question still to get told they needed to know the full amount I was going to spend to finish the basement.

Anyone have any insight on this?

An electrician should be able to pull just an electrical permit separate from the building, ...»
mechanical or plumbing, especially if you are doing it in stages-you just will not get a final or Certificate of Occupancy until all work is complete. You can pull the permit yourself and list the electrician as a sub-contractor. Also, the fees are based on square footage, but that does not mean you are spending that amount of money-simply list what you expect to pay and unless it is unreasonably low, the permit fee will be based on that.

  • The shed has 3 sets of French doors and a 4' roof overhang supported by large brackets.
  • Installing the shed.
  • The owner etched the concrete on the front porch.
  • The interior has drywall walls, but the ceiling framing and cypress roof sheathing are left exposed.
  • The back wall has no windows or doors - perfect for shelves.
  • A lovely view into the garden.
  • The exterior finished.

Remodeling: Any ideas on how to transform a large utility shed into a "cute house?

I purchased a large 12'X16' utility shed to fix the inside up as an office. The interior is very cute and welcoming, but the outside is an eyesore in my backyard. We've thought of ...»
building a porch on it and painting the front door a pretty color, but? The porch idea would be the width of the building 12' and 4' out. I thought of columns but that is as far as I have gotten. Help please from you wonderful creative people. I will try and get a picture in a day or two.

Create an entry w/ a simple arbor (cheaper than tie in w/ roof structure) , then a little ...»
patio space. You could use metal panels on arbor for cover.

I assume it already has windows on the sides and/ or back. Shutters can add interest w/ complimentary color.

Something for Nothing! Build Raised Planting Beds for Free!

Who says you can't get something for nothing? I just finished two raised beds made from my neighbor's old shutters and odds and ends of left over wood, then painted them with surplus deck ...»
paint! ZERO COST!!

For quite a while, I have admired all sorts of wonderful homemade and commercial raised beds seen on Pinterest and Hometalk. Because I couldn't justify the cost of buying the lumber and didn't want to tackle disassembling pallets, raised beds did not seem to be in my future. But then, our neighbors replaced their shutters and were nice enough to give them to me when I asked. They know by now that a repurposing project is about to get underway.

You could do other configurations, but I used two shutters on each side and one-half a shutter for the ends. That used up all ten of the free shutters. Odds and ends of lumber stored in the garage rafters came down and became corner, end and middle supports. I even had enough wood screws from another project to use for this one!

A new kitchen inspired by an ad from 1959

I love my mid-century house by the beach, but I've always regretted the fact that the previous owners ripped out the original kitchen and put in one of those characterless and cheap ...»
oak-trimmed laminate kitchens that for some inexplicable reason were so popular in the 1980s. When I finally bit the bullet and decided to re-do the kitchen, I wanted to create something that was appropriate to the house and found my inspiration in a 1959 ad for a Hotpoint kitchen. It was both practical (tiled walls) and handsome, with a great punch of color from a tiled accent wall containing the turquoise (!) wall oven. While I ultimately decided a wall oven wouldn't work for me, and I went for the durability of stainless (the salt in the air is tough on things here at the beach), I think I've ended up the with a kitchen that honors the inspiration, and my home's history.

Remodeling: Adult w/ med issues would like to have small COTTAGE built in parents' GA HUGE backyard. Do-able? Thoughts?

I live in Georgia and am going to be moving in with my parents. We're discussing having a small cozy cottage built in my parents' backyard. They have 2 acres and it's not in an HOA ...»
subdivision. We found the perfect spot to build such a cottage. Do the regulations in Cobb County Ga allow this? They are on septic tank, so the small cottage for 1 person would need to be connected to their existing septic tank and utilities. No garage or driveway needed. Also, we'd like to do this for $25,000 or less. Thoughts?
