  • 2. Lemon Catnip. Brew tea from its leaves and spray on plants to drive away flea beetles.
  • 4. Lemon Balm. Citronella compounds in its leaves do a wonderful job of repelling insects. Safe to rub on your skin as an organic mosquito repellent. 1
  • 4. German Chamomile improves oil production in herbs and improves flavor of onions and cabbage. You can also brew tea from its flowers.
  • 5. Scented marigolds keep the soil free of nematodes and attract beneficial insects like ladybugs.
  • 6. Nasturtiums make a great barrier around tomato plants, deterring squash bugs and trapping aphids. Nasturtium leaves and flowers are edible, making them a great addition to salads. 1
  • 7. Geraniums repel cabbage worms and Japanese beetles.
  • 8. Petunias repel leafhoppers, aphids, tomato worms. Like catnip, tea brewed from its leaves can be sprayed on your plants as an organic insecticide.

  • The one we decided to keep for ourselves. We got the text from one of the Graphic Fairy's images :) 1
  • Here is a nice before and after shot of the one that sold right away.
  • Here's one that simply needed some paint. It was scratched and gouged here and there, but after, she looked great! 1
  • Another shot of the one we kept for our own home. We got the text from one of the Graphic Fairy's images :)
  • Another view. We got the text from one of the Graphic Fairy's images :) 1
  • Here are a few of the befores on some of the coffee stations. You can clearly see they needed a little TLC. No problemo!
  • This one sold about half an hour after it was done being waxed.
  • A smaller example. it was a 4 drawer smaller dresser, we gutted it, moved the supports around and added the baskets.
  • This dresser had all the drawers removed totally and replaced with some fun doors. But a dowel in between the top and theres a great place to hang herbs, or towels, or even utensils! 1
  • Another possibility. It wasn't made for a coffee station, however, if you cut the front off and hinge it at the bottom, it can drop down for hidden storage and still be functional and super cute!
  • Another idea, a little taller though.

Coffee Stations from Re-Purposed Dressers

A big part of why I created Gypsy Barn was to find creative and inventive ways to keep things from going to the landfill or burn sites, when they are still useable in some way shape or ...»
form. Old dressers have such beautiful wood and shapes and designs, I hated seeing them sent off to the dump. Even using the wood for signs, coat hooks, shelves, whatever, they are still useable. A year and a half ago I made the first coffee station, and now, I am getting requests non stop for them!

Inspiration - I sat looking at an old dresser one day, and thought, there has to be SOMETHING to use this for, even without the drawers ... and walking through a furniture store, I started paying more attention to sofa tables and entertainment units. There is a lot of wood, and a lot of empty space going on there. Just like the dressers! Hmmmmmm. Then, we got a keurig. Cups were in the cupboard, little coffee pucks were on the counter, sugar in the pantry, spoons in a drawer at the other end of the counter ...... Why not create a space for it all. Voila - Coffee station. Everything in one little place. Hidden away, neat and clean.

Keeping in line with the "keep the landfills empty" we bought the K-cup and use our own coffee. All those empty coffee pucks getting tossed wasn't ideal, even with recycling. However, for those wishing to use them, the drawer stores them away nicely. Along with mugs and spoons. We keep our sugar and cinnamon underneath and the basket for other things. Usually we keep a bowl for old grinds on the top, it just wasnt pretty enough for the photo lol. But all the grinds go to the gardens. So here you have it folks. Coffee Stations

Repurposed cabinet for coffee bar and storage

My coffee bar made from old cabinets that I refinished and a piece of granite I found. My favorite project from last year.

Chippy Door Salvage + Ironstone Plates = LOVE

I wanted to find a unique way to display a few of my favorite ironstone pieces, and a super chippy piece salvaged from a farmhouse door ended up being the perfect thing. Once I removed ...»
the panel from the old door, I just added hangers on the back. I affixed hangers to the back of the plates, rather than mounting them to the board, so I can switch them out if I feel like it. The piece above the display is salvage from an antique side table.

I also made a complimentary piece to display my favorite tarnished antique spoons, so I used some tongue and groove wood that was salvaged from a demolished Missouri courthouse as the backdrop for them.

Lots of history in every piece of these displays!

  • This rustic piece started as an old discarded cabinet with broken handles. 2
  • We used old branches from the yard as hardware in keeping with the rustic look 1
  • A cat flap and vent were added. 1
  • The cabinet was gutted with the drawer fronts mounted on wood and hinged to open freely to clean the litter box 1
  • Coco started using it that day, and it's been wonderful to have the litterbox out of the bathroom. Coco loves the privacy too. 3

You'll never guess what's inside this cabinet..

Take a guess what's on the inside of this rustic piece. You'd probably never expect it. An old discarded cabinet takes on a whole new purpose.

The entire makeover can be seen at Recaptured Charm.
