About Me:

Love to garden, landscape, renovate our home, read, write, and spend time with my son, Holden, who is nearly 8, and my husband of 23 years.

Favorite area of home improvement:

The yard. I love creating sanctuaries where I can go and just listen to the birds sing and the wind blow. Upcoming projects include building a small sitting area near our creek and putting in a bathroom on the second floor in and old bedroom.

  • Garden pavers and some pea stone. Hose it all down after a night of wood burning fun.

  • Last year we added a couple more chairs and a new fireplace.

http://www.recapturedcharm.com/2010/06/fire-pit-patio.html
  • Cut a circle the size you want your patio and remove all grass and dirt to about 6 inches down minimum

  • After the circle is cut and the grass/soil removed, we laid down some landscapers cloth. The cloth was then covered in limestone screening.
  • An edging stone was used to keep everything contained at grass level. Plastic edging at garden area. Fill in with more screening. Tamper the limestone down, water tamper again. Best to let sit a couple of days
  • Arrange your pavers leaving space for pea stone.
  • Fill with pea stone. Landscape around the patio

Fire Pit Patio

Building this Fire Pit Patio was the best thing we've done in the yard. We really get so much enjoyment from it. We've since replaced the actual outdoor fireplace and added a couple more ...»
chairs. Easy to do if you don't mind a little exercise! Well worth the work.

Love it and thank you! We've been considering how to create something very similar to ...»
this...and seeing it makes it more of a possibility for us. I'm hoping to post photos once spring truly arrives here in Minnesota. It was a balmy 3 degrees yesterday..the first official day of Spring...ha ha!

What would you add?

We will be tearing out and re-doing the front beds in a few months when we replace our basement windows. I have never been happy with the overall look of the front but especially the R. ...»
side (pic#1.) The driveway is on that side and we have an additional spot for parking in front of the house (you can see the edge of a truck in the pic.) I feel like there needs to be vertical interest but am at a loss. This area is on the South side and gets the late day sun (starting at around 4 'til sunset). How would you continue or incorporate your idea into the left..I'm anal about symmetry. By the way, Hubs does not like bushes and any tree ideas need to be less than 6ft.

I'd make the entire home one color then add shutters to the windows...on the main house that ...»
is. On the porch/entry I'd get a new front door...get rid of the storm door, unless you get a full view one...you need a shrub with some height on the right corner of the main house...either a tall evergreen, or a lilac topiary. A nice flagstone path to the front would be nice as well. I'd even consider bringing in some stone facade to the porch...totally covering the front...then 4-5 feet up the wall with a ledge on the main house...just to break up all that siding. Hey...I don't know...just what I'd do...but it does cost some money. Start with unifying the color of the home...and dressing up the windows. Brickmoulding helps bring out the windows as well....they have vinyl brickmoulding available. Good luck and have fun. We loved renovating our two homes. Currently we're focusing on landscaping where we live.

Awesome...I was wondering about getting one of these to rent for a day. We have a lot of ...»
projects that this tool would come in handy for. Nice job on the walkway...we'd love to attempt that this summer as well. It really dresses things up!

It looks like a Phlox to me too...as I have many in my flower bed and I was the one that put ...»
them there. They will take off and get fairly tall too.
