Jute and Sisal Wrapped Drum Shade

As part of the Hometalk and Wayfair #DIYChallenge I took a plain looking lamp shade and turned it into a unique costal lamp shade that I not only love but my better half Matt likes to!!

  • Croton, Rubber Plant, Boston Fern, Staghorn Fern
  • After the dormant period during winter, a plant may have lost all it's leaves. Lightly scratch the branch with your nail, if you see green under the bark, it is still alive.
  • Remove dead leaves and prune dead and broken branches. (This is a nephthytis)
  • Pot-bound root ball on the dracaena
  • Gently loosen roots so they don't grow around themselves
  • Apply a micorrhiza to the roots to help the plant absorb nutrients
  • Dilute 1 1/2 tablets of 81mg aspirin in 2 gallons of water, use every few days on stressed plants. Misting with this solution is also a good idea. 1
  • Add moss, bark chips or decorative stone to finish off the planter. I don't always but sometimes it looks good.

How to Re-pot your Houseplants

March & April are the months I re-pot my tropicals. I have quite a few houseplants, well over 100 (it's an addiction, I know) so it takes a while to get them all transplanted. And I don't ...»
do all of them every year...I'd like to, but I don't.

Some rules of thumb (green thumb? haha) -

Only go up one pot size when re-potting.

Cover the drainage holes with broken clay pots or I use a coffee filter.

Use a good lightweight potting soil (never soil from your gardens!), and never use soil that comes with fertilizer in it.

Add micorrhiza to the soil and make sure the roots are in contact with it.

Never plant your plants deeper than the pots they start in.

Water well.

Do not use fertilizer for a few weeks after re-potting.

Use aspirin to help weak or stressed plants.

Hiding Unsightly Fence Areas

I was having a Graduation party for my daughter in our backyard. My neighbor had just repaired a portion of his redwood fence, but he used regular plywood, which maybe he didn't care what ...»
it looked like on his side as it was for him out of site, but on our side of the fence it was in perfect view of anyone sitting on the deck. Very unsightly for myself and my guests. What to do? I couldn't paint my side of the fence, as there was a short chain link fence on my side. So I did this...very inexpensive

1. went rock hunting (it's what I call it) at a local construction site (free rocks)

2. Free mulch (at the local community tree branch drop off area)

3 Lattice Boards ($8-$10 at local home improvement center)

4.rolled wire

5 Weed control plastic ($5-$6) or use newspaper (free)

Directions:

1. Attach lattice board to back side of fence area with wire, or what ever works best, depending on the fence your covering.

2. Rock off area you want to cover using small to medium rocks ( I go rock hunting on Sat-Sun between 6-10am when the crews are not there, as some contractors collect the rocks to sell)

3.Loosen soil beforehand, so you can plants before or after you place the mulch.

4. Place weed control covering

5. Spread mulch over area

Note: you may add plants and shrubs before or after you spread mulch. I added after as I wasn't sure what I wanted. I also added an Arch the following year.

  • Just say NO to the dreaded door stopper. You won't need it anymore after this fix.
  • Remove the hinge pin from the middle hinge or bottom hinge.
  • Slightly bend the hinge pin using a hammer and scrap piece of wood.

Fix a Door that Closes or Opens by Itself

Anyone else have this problem: your door automatically closes or opens?

Before this simple fix we had to use a door stopper to keep the bathroom door from ...»

closing.

My wife was just a bit perturbed when I told her how easy this repair was to do. The back story is that we've had this issue for 6 years (and yes, she's been after me to do it for that long).

Please don't judge me too much!! I apologized to her and have done several things to make it up.

Here's what you do, pull the hinge pin from the middle hinge. If you only have two hinges then pull the pin from the bottom hinge.

Place the hinge pin on a scrap piece of wood. Tap the center of the pin with a hammer (2-3 times depending on how much spinach you eat).

This puts a slight bend in the center of the pin. The bend will prevent the door from moving by itself.

Put the pin back in the hinge and you're done!! No more door that closes or opens by itself :)

Don't be like me, do this easy weekend DIY project and stay on the good side of your spouse-LOL.

In case you'd like to see how to do this via a short video check out my post at http://www.homerepairtutor.com/fix-a-door-th...

Transform a trash Chandelier into a Dessert Tray

One of my favorite things I created! I didn't want to throw away a chandelier I had. So I thought up this idea to transform it into a dessert tray. It is one of my popular posts to date!

Hanger double duty

I saw this in Good Housekeeping last night so I took a picture for you with my own too-round hangers to give you the idea. It is a simple soda can tab hung over one hanger giving you double room in your closet.

  • Placing birdhouses off the ground is key to keep predators away from them. Do a little research as to the types of birds in your area to ensure you find a house that will work for them. 1
  • Small birdhouses can be placed on small metal or wood post or hung for depending on how you want them to appear in your garden. Yard Envy has a lot of choices on housing, posts, and information on what kind of house will work for you.
  • Multiple birdhouses can add a splash of color and depth to your garden. You must make sure the birds that would reside in this type of house will get along though! No one wants a feathered quarrel. 4
  • Home made posts can let you add even more character and color than traditional store bought designs.
  • Copper top houses are great for warmer climates as they keep the inside temperature pretty stable. Make sure your birdhouses have easy cleaning capability as well. You need to clean them each season to ensure new guests will arrive.
  • Keeping some birdhouses directly out of the garden and in a more natural setting adds to the charm along with helping birds to feel more secluded and safe.
  • Bright colored flowers attract some species of birds and having a house mixed among the taller colorful flower bed will ensure a beautiful view for your new feathered friends.
  • You can use older styles and home made birdhouses as well to add character to your buildings, fences, and walkways.

Placing Birdhouses in the Garden

It's that time of year where we all start working on our garden. A garden isn't complete without the fluttering of bright colored birds. Attracting birds to your garden is key for having ...»
that peaceful "nature" feeling when you walk outdoors. Placing birdhouses strategically around the property will ensure a variety of birds enter your garden.

  • Repurposed WWII Military First Aid Storage Suitcase Table w/ Sewing Machine Base & Yardsticks
  • I cleaned the vintage metal base and gave it several coats of fire engine red paint. I then hand painted the white lettering.
  • On the interior, I installed a subfloor to mount the base to the suitcase and then installed a custom yardstick floor with several coats of poly to finish it. 1
  • I left the parchment paper that lined the interior to keep it original to the era and style.
  • Custom graphics were stenciled and painted onto the top of the vintage suitcase and then distressed.
  • The metal base still swivels and spins.
