About Me:

NOT a contractor and have NO problem hiring quality work. Need lots of work done at the house as I am continually looking for improving appearance, functionality and energy efficiency. (Football, Softball, Beach and Pool!)

Favorite area of home improvement:

What I can affect: yard work, plants and flowers. Don't have mechanical skills for interior, so hire contractors for that!

Gardening: I bought a somewhat leggy tomato plant and upon looking online to see

how to plant it, I found a video that said to put it into the ground sorta lying on its side but then pull it up into the upright position. Said the part underground would form roots and send up new plants (I think that what's she said). Shown here is a screen shot from the video showing how she's lying part of it down into a long hole in the ground. She also said to put some bone meal into the planting hole to produce more tomatoes instead of more green parts. Ideas on whether any of this is a good idea?

Morning Jeanette. I have a Ring Neck and Black snakes back in my yard and woods and I go in ...»
there all the time. These don't bother me, and I don;t bother them, THOUGH recently told to be careful because we DO have venomous snakes being 660 feet from the river. ** So now, after 5 years living here, get a little freaked out when I see a snake I don't recognize. (WORSE are SPIDERS! HATE SPIDERS!)

THE IMPATIEN Dilemma

Whether you are a garden novice or a veteran gardener, you may be aware of the sad fact that our shade garden annual favorite is being denied life by the nasty downy mildew that spreads ...»
all across our nation now. Even if you save your own Impatien seed and keep other garden center plants away from your carefully and lovingly tended imps, you are still vulnerable as this is an airborn pathogen that will stay in your soil from one season to the next. It starts on the underside of the plant where you don't always see it. You won't notice until the leaves turn yellow and fall off, the plant withering and dying. There is nothing as of yet that effectively will combat the virulent attack.

This is my list of alternatives to the dilemma of what to plant to give that same heavenly splash of color in the shade garden.

My top picks are

1) Begonia , green wax leaf, tuberous , angel and dragon wing

2) Torenia

3) Browallia

4) New guinea impatien

5) Diascia

6) Fuschia

7) Balsam

8) Shade coleus

9) Lobelia

10) Euphorbia 'diamond frost'

11) Geraniums

12) Ageratum

13) Caladiums

14) Strobilanthes

15) Fan Flower(Scaevola)

There are a bunch more that will take part shade such as Nicotiana, Salvia, and Sweet Williams.

I will miss the sweet sweet impatien, but while the experts search for a cure, it gives us all the opportunity to step out of our garden box and into the wild new territory of DIFFERENT and awesome plants that will put a smile on our garden faces.#itchingforspring

$15 Raised Garden Bed

@ melissa: I ran over to our local Nursery and the lady there (Extremely helpful, wish you ...»
could do like a shout-out for appreciation - Smithfield Gardens, Suffolk, VA!) ** ANYWAY... she told me biggest issue people have is they don't "feed" their plants and vegetables. She said too many people plant and water and don;t realize you consistently have to feed them. So I have this new phosphate heavy flowers fertilizer (7-22-8) and also tomatoes (Herb & Vegetable food). So we'll see if THIS makes any difference! $41 dollars ontop of the initial expenses... wondering if I am better off just BUYING tomatoes from the store!!!!

slow down on the nitrogen (first number in fertilizer) and increase the phosphorus (second ...»
number). Nitrogen is great for getting green grass, but not so much for blooms. If you feed a plant a lot of nitrogen it throws all the energy into leaves, and takes energy away from the blooms. Many of the 'flowers' you see at the Lowes and other stores are 'forced' by the growers by manipulating several factors including growth regulators, light regulation and chemical fertilizers. Sometimes it makes for a weak plant, sometimes it does not affect the outcome.

Hibiscus. (all looked bad last year and help last season from Hometalk friends to bring them back from barely any growth.). The seeds from these plants, plus the seeds from the Giant Hibiscus plant are not germinating. I saved them in envelopes in a closet in the garage (50+ degrees during the winter). I planted them over 4 weeks ago now assuming they would germinate into new Miracle Grow soil, keeping the soil moist, but none have germinated. I'm just experimenting to learn so its not too big a deal, BUT I should be able to get growth.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Husqvarna Push Lawn Mower - Carb Issue - Leaking Gas??

Bought a Husqvarna Push lawn mower last season thinking better quality and it will last. The KOHLER Engine on it started leaking gas like crazy and dealer says on the phone, without looking at it, that the carburator is no good. are issues. Does anyone know who or how I get this fixed at no cost to me? Recall for repair of a good carburator??? I would think Husqvarana would stand by their equipment being so expensive.
