Headboard Made From Dresser Mirror

Our daughter outgrew her loft, when we removed the loft she had a boring bed with no headboard for her updated room. The Contest was the perfect opportunity to create a headboard for her.
A friend asked if I had any use for this dresser mirror. I can't turn down free building material especially when my favorite thing to do is repurpose!
To turn this dresser mirror into a headboard we had to start by removing the backing that held the mirror in place. We carefully took the mirror out but saved it included in the finishing steps of the headboard.
To make the mirror frame tall enough to be at headboard height we added "legs." We cut 2x4s down to fit the mirror frame and allowing room to add a frame and shelves. The 2x4's were reused from her loft that we removed.
Basically we created a bookshelf unit made the same size as the opening of the mirror frame. Then secured the shelf unit to the mirror frame and the legs.
Corner trim with Liquid nails and brads were added to the back of the shelf unit on both sides and the bottom. We cut a piece of scrap to the same width as the mirror to ensure we left the right size gap for the mirror. After the mirror was slid into the frame the top corner trim was added.
For extra support a brace was added between the legs using pocket screws. The entire unit was Spray painted with a semi gloss Black paint.
The theme this month for the contest was "icing on the cake" I think this headboard with the shiny paint and mirror certainly are like icing on her bed. For more about this room update and more about this headboard please visit the blog.
