Our living room isn’t very big and seating is sometimes an issue. I wanted to add some chairs but didn’t want the space to look and feel so busy or crowded. I thought adding some cute ottoman stools would be the perfect solution.

I picked up some 2x2 pieces from our local hardware store for the legs and base, and 1x2 for the supports.

The straightest pieces I could find were some fence stakes, so I needed to trim off the ends.

Measurements:

Legs 15 1/4”

Base 22” x 12.5”

Supports 19 1/4” x 12.5”

Once cuts were done, it was important to lay everything flat to make sure it all sat nicely and level. If you’re not wanting screws to show you could use a kreg and do pocket holes.

It’s a good idea to pre-drill the holes to avoid any cracking in the pieces.

Clamping everything made it easier to screw everything together while keeping it all square.

Once the ottoman was built, I then added some 2x4 support slats across the top. These were cut to 12.5” and I did 3 across the top.

I loved the look of the wood so decided to go with a natural stain.

I had debated adding some yarn detail on the side but ultimately decided against it as it looked to busy.

I wanted a durable heavy duty fabric so I picked up a bag of drop cloth from the hardware store. It was the perfect color and worked well with the natural wood stain.

For the cushion size be sure to add an extra inch to allow for sewing. You will cut the first piece an inch bigger than your cushion. Then for the backside, you’ll cut two pieces that overlap slightly. This will allow you to remove the cushion cover for washing.

We did the straps long enough to tie around the stool and finished size to an inch thick.

Be sure to include these on the inside

(right side) so that when you flip the cushion cover inside out, they are on the outside.

I used some standard feather pillows and stuffed the pillows into the cases and tied them onto the ottomans.

I absolutely love how they turned out and what they add to the space.
