What can I use to fill up space in deep planters (other than soil)?

I doing an up-cycled horizontal 2-drawer file cabinet (without drawers) and the amount of soil will be extensive. I’m aware of peanuts but want something more affordable. Any thoughts? BTW I don’t have plastic bottles. Thanks fellow Hometalkers!

You can use any Styrofoam that comes in boxes of small appliances etc. If you have no such Styrofoam on hand, you can ask to get them from dumpsters at places like Walmart or from friends, neighbors etc. We have asked our home improvement stores for packing styrofoam more than once and they are happy to oblige us. Breaking or cutting them in pieces would allow for the water to drain while still keeping the space used. I would just place them in the bottom, whole, with the edges clear and maybe a few places in the foam cut or holes in them. This keeps the file cabinet lighter so if you need to move it you can and saves you the cost of more soil.
I use empty aluminum pop cans in my big planters...light weight and doesn't take so much dirt. I have also used the little black plastic pots that plants come in...they squish nicely in the bottom of the pot.
