Ideas please

These are the lower kitchen cabinets in a 9 x11 kitchen, at the end of the cabinets there is door that goes to back porch. My dilemma is that with the two dogs in and out, the bottom cabinet doors get dirty all the time and I am constantly wiping them down. Right now, there is also no floor in the kitchen. There is just a painted subfloor with a carpet. Eventually the goal is to renovate the kitchen. I want to keep the look and feel of vintage cottage since the home was built in the 50's. I removed all the doors of the upper cabinets and scraped /sanded and painted them for open shelving.
I thought that I would have gingham red check cafe curtains instead of the doors (this way I can remove the curtains and wash) or paint them a nice dark/medium gray. Open to ideas. Thanks!

Don't do the curtains ...then the dirt gets in the cabinets. No way to relocate the door?

You might want to paint the cabinets with semi-gloss enamel paint that is similar in color to your counter top. It appears to be metallic in color.

Thanks the counter is going going to replace wth butcher block or black quartz . The previous owners used large tiles for countertop, not even or grouted. Colors eventually in the kitchen, gray floors, i have a soft butter yellow pedestal table with black gingham bench cushions.

I have pets too and they are a dirty lot! No way around cleaning up after them....all you can do is try to make it easier on yourself. WHITE is not your friend in this situation. I suggest paint the lower cabinets with a durable semi-gloss paint that will hold up to frequent washing/scrubbing in a color that will hide/camouflage the dirt in between washings. Also choose flooring that is easily cleaned and color that hides the dirt....like vinyl (no tile with mortar seams or hardwood/laminate that requires special care). If you do that, a quick wipe down and quick spray mop daily, every other, weekly, whatever will help preserve your sanity.

I dont think I would remove the doors. Painting is always an option as a quick fix since you mentioned the kitchen may get re-done.

Hi Michelle Semi-gloss paint is the way to go for now. Freshen up with paint that you can wipe down as needed. be sure to ask your paint specialist for the most durable paint as you'll be wiping it down frequently. That may also have suggestions for colors to keep your vintage cottage vibe going!

Don't paint them a dark color because it will show dirt easier (that's why a black car seems to show dirt easier.) The white is a bad choice also. (white seems to get dingy after a while.) If you paint them use a light gray or a light taupe. The gray would be best ofr a 50's diner feel. If you do the curtains, don't do all the cabinets. I think it cheapens the look of your cabinets. Just do the ones closest to the door and once the dogs are inside teach them to walk away from the cabinets. Another option is to install a doggy door in another area.

I had almost the same cabinets and here's what I did. I added a piece of 1/4 inch by 2 inch strips and brad nailed them to the cabinet and then repainted. Then added new knobs or you could reuse the ones you have.

I agree with the semi gloss paint. It will make for easy clean up. Also if you remove the doors, whatever you store in the cabinet will get much dirtier with just curtains. The curtains will blow in the breeze from the back door, pets and passers by, which will allow more dirt and especially pet hair in the cabinet. Try Mr Clean Magic Erasers to clean the doors when they get dirty. They work great with very little elbow grease!
