These beautiful DIY coastal napkin rings are the perfect accent to any summer tablescape. They are easy, inexpensive, and so fun to make. Today, I’m sharing two different styles. One style is more casual, while the other style is a little more formal. I love them both! I’ll let you decide which you like the best.

Napkin Rings: Perfect Table Accent Pieces

I’ve always considered napkin rings the perfect accent pieces for the table. They accent the theme of the table setting, much in the way that jewelry accents our wardrobe. Napkin rings are a small, but meaningful way to tie a tablescape together.

What I love about napkin rings is that they can be simple or fancy, colorful or neural, store-bought or handmade. The sky’s the limit! They are a fun way to add shimmer, shine, color, and character to a table setting.

Although I have many store-bought napkin rings, I also love making my own. They not only accent the table beautifully, but they also add a thoughtful touch to the overall design. Handmade napkin rings are great conversation pieces too. Here are a couple of the DIY napkin rings I’ve made in the past:

Casual DIY Coastal Napkin Rings

These casual coastal napkin rings are made from materials mostly found around the house. You only need a few things. This version of DIY coastal napkin rings is a great way to reuse the cardboard cylinder inside a roll of paper towels or a roll of wrapping paper.

Materials:
  • Cardboard cylinder from inside a paper towel roll or roll of wrapping paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Roll of twine
  • Hot glue (gun)
  • 3-4 inch starfish

How to Make Casual DIY Coastal Napkin Rings:

First, using a ruler or a tape measure, measure out 1-2 inch widths on the cardboard cylinder and mark them with a pencil.

Then, with scissors, cut along the marks creating 4, 6, 8, or even 12, rings that will be used as the base of the napkin rings.

Next, place a small dot of hot glue along the edge of the cardboard ring. Carefully, attach the end of the twine to the hot glue and continue to line the edge of the cardboard with a thin line of hot glue.

Once the twine is attached to the edge of the cardboard with the hot glue, continue to wrap the cardboard ring with the twine until it’s completely covered. When you get to the opposite edge of the cardboard ring, lightly line it with hot glue (the same way you did when at the other end). Attach the final row of twine along the edge, cut the twine, and secure it with a small dot of hot glue if necessary.

Finally, place a small dot of hot glue in the middle of the napkin ring and press the starfish on it.

Viola! Your causal DIY coastal napkin rings are complete.

Fancier DIY Coastal Napkin Rings

Looking for a more formal coastal napkin ring to adorn your table this summer? No problem, I’ve got you covered! I added a coastal touch to inexpensive silver napkin rings and created a beautiful way to accent any summer tablescape.

Materials:
  • Silver napkin rings
  • Roll of twine
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue (gun)
  • 3-4 inch starfish

How to Make Fancier DIY Coastal Napkin Rings:

First, in the center of the napkin ring, hold the end of the twine perpendicular with your finger leaving about a three-inch tail.

Next, begin wrapping the twine around the end you are holding. Wrap it around the center of the napkin ring several times until it’s the desired width. (My twine took up about a 1/2-inch in the center of my napkin ring.) Then, cut the twine leaving about three more inches on the end. Bring the tail you started with and the three-inch end of the twine together and tie a knot.

Then, trim the access twine ends off, leaving only the knot. Finally, add a small dot of hot glue on the knot in the center of the napkin ring on the twine and attach a starfish.

That’s it! Now, you have beautiful coastal napkin rings to use on your summer tablescape.

Style and Enjoy

For my first tablescape of the summer out by the pond, I used my DIY sea glass bottles as part of the centerpiece along with my DIY coastal napkin rings at each place setting. They added the perfect seasonal and personal touch to the table and everyone loved them.

Now, it’s time to style and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Use your DIY coastal napkin rings on a formal dining room table, an outdoor patio table setting, for a barbeque, or for a picnic by the water. No matter where they are used, your new coastal napkin rings are sure to be the perfect accent pieces for the setting.
