Kids birthday party decorations are super expensive and you only need them for a few hours, once a year. This year for her 4th birthday party, my daughter Ellis wanted a unicorn themed party. I looked online and was seeing unicorn posters and signs that were so beautiful, but cost between $20 and $100 each! She’s a super cute kid, but for a one-day party?! No way.

In order to save a few dollars, I decided to make some wall hangings instead of buying them. This week was a cardboard challenge so I started with a few big pieces of cardboard. I spray painted one piece gold and the other one silver.
I took another piece of cardboard and drew an outline of a unicorn. Then, with an exacto-knife I cut the cardboard to my desired shape.

I laid the outline on top of the gold piece of cardboard and spray painted silver all around it. I did the opposite for the silver piece of cardboard and sprayed a gold layer around my cutout.
i had this cool stencil that Hometalk had sent me months ago so I sprayed some spray paint onto it.
Next, I used Elmer’s glitter glue and outlined the unicorn edges and detailed the stencil outline. Then, I added some Unicorn quotes using Crayola glitter pens and Emler’s glitter glue. Finally, I wrapped the edges in ribbons and stapled them on.
They say, “Be a Unicorn in a field of horses,” and “Always be yourself unless you can be a unicorn. In that case, you should always be a unicorn.”
And here they are, side-by-side.
I ended up taking my normal art off the wall and hanging these up for decoration. Given that they were basically made for free and my daughter loves them, I am pretty happy with the result. I think you can do something like this for any theme of birthday party. Let me know what you think or if you give it a try.

The unicorn theme can take your daughter through high school! My youngest granddaughter is five. She wants all horses to be a Pegasus, with a unicorn horn! 😇
